Norm Coleman urges GOP to take on immigration

A week after Hispanic voters helped President Barack Obama win another four years in office, a prominent Minnesota Republican is calling on his party to reform immigration laws so immigrants living in the U.S. illegally can become legal rather than be deported.

Former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman made his pitch in an opinion piece for the Pioneer Press posted online Thursday, Nov. 15, departing from stances he took five years ago while in office.

Coleman said he believes his evolution on immigration is reflective of many Americans' stance on the issue, and it's time to allow otherwise law-abiding immigrants pathways to citizenship so they can be vocal and visible members of society.

They tried immigration reform back in 1983...with Simpson Rodino. Saying this would be the last amnesty. I think this is sending a real cool message to illegals. DON”T go to the Embassy, don’t give your real name when working, get across illegally, bribed, get a job under an alias name, and use the racists term if anyone challenges you. SCREW the poor souls that stand in line at 4 a.m, who give REAL identity, doing photographs and REWARD the riff raft who defied the laws and officials. LEAD... and give these people a USA passport, and make the whole world respect your country as Law and Order country.

I'd rather the pubbies filibustered and sat on their hands for 4 years.

If they do ANYthing, it will be a squeeze play and nothing good will come of it.

Defund every social program and let the veto pen come out.

Sorry asshat coleman, my feelings on the meaning of citizenship have not evolved. It means something to me if not to you and the morons who believe like you that is we have one big landing zone here for anyone who wishes to drive, fly or boat in over the border. I have an idea, why not see if your idea of evolving immigration and citizenship has made it to say China? Drop in, say they owe you citizenship and benefits and see what happens. Call me from the next life.

CLOSE THE BORDERS FIRST! Same thing we have been screaming since before the 2004 election which gave Republicans the majority in both Houses. Could have been a pretty simple bill and then you could have reformed the immigration process. As usual, the voice of the people takes a back seat and only possibly heard after all other SPECIAL INTERESTS are heard.

These amnesty pimps aren’t suddenly having a change of heart. They’ve been chomping at the bit for years to let the illegals stay. It’s called surrendering the country rather than defending it. Whether that surrender is for economic advantage, i.e. cheap labor, political pandering, or simply a lack of will to defend the country, it’s still surrender.

These RINO sellouts are fooling themselves if they seriously think the GOP can win over Hispanics with an amnesty. The GOP cannot out pander the pander party, aka Democrats.

When is the treatment of American citizens in Mexico and their rights vs US treatment of Mexicans going to be an issue when we discuss amnesty ?

Ever hear of reciprocal aggrements ? These are arranged to protect the rights of American citizens working or living in other countries.

Why is it when it comes to citizens of other countries we are required to offer them the same privledges as we do to US citizens? But when it comes to US citizens who get in trouble or attempt to do business in other countries they do not get the same treatment their citizens get.

Americans can’t own coast land in Mexico. And get no title to it elsewhere. If they run out of cash they’ll get unceremoniously sent back or put in jail untill some relative comes up with the “fresh”. That’s just for starters as for granting them voting privledges yea let’s give Mexican citizens that right when American citizens vote in their elections .

And the GOP wonders why it has trouble winning elections with schmucks like Coleman!

This from the weenie who lost his seat to the clown, Al Franken, after multiple crooked recounts and did nothing about the travesty. Why is he giving advice to anyone about running a successful campaign?

Every single scheme the Pubbies try politically to attract Hispanic voters will fail miserably. Because you can’t outpander the all-time champs of pandering, the Democrat Party. Every time the Pubbies have tried to pander (like Reagan legalizing 3 million), it has been met with resounding failure. Stick to principle. Illegal immigration must be met with strong measures: arrest and deportation. Screw the appeasement “experts” who will doom the party and doom the country with their ill-advised and worthless suggestions.

“Defund every social program and let the veto pen come out.”

This is what the 30 GOP governors should do. Why penalize the citizens in your state for the aid and comfort of the illegals? They will happily take every tax dollar they can and then vote Democrat in the next election. At least we can make them a wee bit less fat and happy while they stab us in the back.

Wow - with stupid ideas like this I’m almost glad Stuart Smilley beat him - of course that was fraud, too - but that’s another issue!

Slow path to progress for U.S. immigrants: 43% on welfare after 20 years

The study, which covers all immigrants, legal and illegal, and their U.S.-born children younger than 18, found that immigrants tend to make economic progress by most measures the longer they live in the U.S. but lag well behind native-born Americans on factors such as poverty, health insurance coverage and homeownership.

The study, based on 2010 and 2011 census data, found that 43 percent of immigrants who have been in the U.S. at least 20 years were using welfare benefits, a rate that is nearly twice as high as native-born Americans and nearly 50 percent higher than recent immigrants.

so more amnesty from republicans helps our country how?

I don’t know why everyone is so afraid of this issue.

IT’S ALL ABOUT NUMBERS!

Politics completely aside… just look at the number of Americans gainfully employed and PAYING TAXES …then compare it with the number of people who actually live here, consuming services, (fire dept, roads, police, educational system, medical services, etc. - and ask yourself:

“How can the revenue of this country POSSIBLY be sufficient to pay for an increasing ‘population’ that includes undocumented workers, who are here and PAY NO TAXES YET… CONSUME SERVICES??????

Political discussion is incidental… because the practical and logical considerations are patently clear and unambiguous!

Get the BS emotional nonsense out of the discussion and look at the immoveable and logical facts!

Take it on, secure the border!

Until they secure the border, any talk of reform is stupid and useless.

It’s like patching and painting a bad spot on the ceiling, without ever dealing with the huge hole in the roof.

They attack the symptom not the problem.

Fix the roof then address the ceiling!

Yes, Norm and so too did the Romans' stance on barbarian immigration 'evolve' to allow them 'pathways to become members of Roman society!'
