Twinkie Maker Hostess to Close
WSJ ^ | November 16, 2012, | RACHEL FEINTZEIG

Posted on 11/16/2012 8:17:04 AM PST by radar101

Hostess Brands is seeking to liquidate. Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of iconic treats such as Twinkies and traditional pantry staple Wonder Bread, said Friday it is shuttering its plants and firing about 18,000 workers as it seeks to liquidate the 82-year-old business.

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 in January, said it has requested bankruptcy-court authorization to close the business and sell its assets.

A victim of changing consumer tastes, high commodity costs and, most importantly, strained labor relations, Hostess ultimately was brought to its knees by a national strike orchestrated by its second-largest union.

The work stoppage, launched Nov. 9 by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union to protest a fresh labor contract, affected about two-thirds of Hostess's 36 plants. The striking workers, which number in the thousands Hostess said in court filings on Friday, were making it impossible for the Irving, Tex., company to continue producing its baked goods, Chief Executive Gregory Rayburn said.

Reminds me of a song by Bobby Bare--"The Winner" SO, the Union WINS. They sought by extortion to make Hostess pay more than they could afford. And Union people wonder why companies relocate to Mexico, Vietnam, Brazil, and so on

“Union Man” by The Cate Brothers

Well, it’s six a.m.
I’m out on the job
Working like a fool
For my pay

A big man walks by
With a smile
Says you got to go
On strike today

Hey, hey, Mr. union man
How am I gonna pay my dues
Or the landlord or the doctor
How am I getting new shoes

Well, I know I need
To help to get that raise
There’s one thing I don’t like

Tell me how can I
Feed my hungry family
I you say I’m going on strike
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/c/cate_brothers/union_man.html ]
Hey, hey, Mr. union man
How am I gonna pay my dues
Owe more money than I can pay
Looks like I’m bound to lose

Well, I don’t see how
I’m going to get ahead
Seem like there ain’t no way

Well, said don’t worry
Cause I understand
Won’t you try to
See things my way

Hey, hey, Mr. union man
Thank you for the helping hand
Hey, hey, Mr. union man
So glad you understand

Morons! You killed your golden goose, or at least you followed your union lead to kill it. Nice job you idiots and now you have no jobs. Is the union going to make up for those lost wages each week? Is the union going to buy you all Christmas? Good luck with that.

Reminds me of when BAMA Pie quit making their small cookie sized pies years ago. There was shock among the working men that they could not get a pecan pie from the machine anymore.

Wonder if LITTLE DEBBIE’s directors are meeting on how to take over the HOSTESS market niche.

Little Debbie is probably already in negotiations this morning to acquire the Hostess name and trademarks then move production to right-to-work states, pay a decent wage and get back to making a killing.

On the other hand I bet Moochele has a smile on her face and is skipping around the WH today...

Other companies will be making those brands soon, they will use their existing facilities. No need to buy up the union-laden ones.

Some of those fools really believed a new buyer would give them their original pay and benefits. They were that deluded.

....and the union members who has jobs are now unemployed....gotta love the employees greed....

I once had a good friend and we hung out a lot. I worked at a GMAD plant for two Summers years ago. I got him a job there and times were good. Excellent pay and very low expenses meant lots of partying.

My father was in management at GM but my friend bought into all the crap the UAW was peddling. He walked the pickets and developed a "Screw Management, I want more! Workers unite!" mentality.

He was like this up to the very day they closed the plant. I had since moved on to greener fields but he spent years there...spouting Union BS and getting sucked down into the drug culture that was rampant at the place.

Haven't seen or heard from him since. I've kept tabs on his ex-wife and hear tidbits. I believe the Union mentality had a large hand in trashing his life.

A union did this to a copper smelter in Arizona- many years ago- smelter closed down, reopened in another state as non-union, strikers were still out in front of old closed smelter for years with their strike signs- makes no sense to me.

Didn't think I'd live to see this happen. I grew up in Rochester, NY. There was a Wonder Bread factory around the corner from us, and you could smell the bread baking. It was wonderful. Back then Schuler's Potato Chips was also producing products, and you could smell the chips cooking too. Schuler's was eventually bought out by Wise.

Freaking unions have screwed up this country. I had to belong to a union when I worked for the state. They were useless when it came to pursuing legitimate grievances. All they wanted was your union dues from your paycheck every two weeks. Trying to get fair representation from the main union office was a joke. Any complaint I ever filed, I won on my own, not because the union did anything.

It's sad that the Hostess company is closing, but I'm glad the union is getting screwed because of it. Stupid people. See how it feels to be without a job the month before Christmas.

Speaking of private stash.....I’ve just texted my husband to go to a couple of the local supermarkets and buy up all the twinkies, and a few cupcakes and ho-hos too.

Gonna be some people wanting this stuff soon. Bwahahahahaha. No, seriously - check out Amazon in a few weeks and see what these snack cakes are selling for there (no, it’s not me selling on Amazon). I recall when Excederine Migraine was pulled for re-formulating, the prices on Amazon skyrocketed! People who are brand loyal can get pretty desperate for their favorite stuff.
