Posted on 11/16/2012 2:14:27 PM PST by tobyhill
Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.
The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.
Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. They had to do it.
I dont have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasnt fair.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.
Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasnt going to work for the employees.
Were not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up, he said. They stopped paying into the pension fund.

Good luck finding a new job you idiots.
They were on Strike. You can’t collect.
Oh Lamont, you big baby. If it wasn’t important to you you could have gone and done something else.
Yet somehow I doubt that’s your true feelings.
” So, Im like, OK. Close it down. “
= So I’m like, close it down dude.
I mean it’s not like I’ll starve or
anything, man. Anyway, I’ve been
meaning to take time off, but
now I’ll get unemployment,
maybe some welfare, food
stamps. Oh no, wait, already
got the stamps, dude.
Anyway, this is cool man.
Work is a real drag. It’s
about time I got what I
deserve. Screw those
rich bastard making more
than me, right?
So now you got 100%, of nothing....
Where do I sign up for welfare
BTW, if you’re making Wonder Bread do you really qualify as a Baker.
Jobs? Who needs a job. Obama Claus is president. They got 99 weeks on unemployment and food stamps and medicaide and who the hell knows what else is coming down the pike.
The union rep will move on to another union job and the workers will get 96 weeks of unemployment.
Who needs a job when you can get unemployment, section 8, healthcare, tuition, foodstamps and an Obamaphone... all for FREE.
In exchange for the pay cut, the union was to be given 25% ownership in the company.
The 99 weeks are done. The most in Texas now is 39 weeks.
This Lamont idiot was probably an affirmative action hire.
When Obama first got elected it took the LATimes nearly six months to get to this propaganda level with their failed attempt at peddling “Funemployment”...
They will now live the gamorous welfare lifestyle.
Yes... these strikers really were this dumb.
Well, now he’s a loafer............
Guess this dip hasn’t looked for other work recently. Wait until he applies for other jobs and the interviewer asks him how the common task of being an “oven operator” qualifies him for employment.
I thought the 99 week of UE thing was over?
This attitude is pretty common in Rocky Mount, particularly among Holder’s people.
You have to wonder.
5000 idiots cost another 13,000 people their jobs. Not to mention the jobs that will be lost in the surrounding communities.
None of these bakeries were in Texas, just the headquarters.
Apparently the government edge-you-kay-shun system in NC doesn’t teach that an 8% pay cut is better than a 100% pay cut.
My wife sees these folks at the Rocky Mount Wal-Mart all the time... using the EBT to buy better food than she’s buying with honest money, then taking it out to load it up in a better car than she’s driving...
That’s exactly what I was thinking! A total idiot!
He would rather sit at home watching cartoons and eating Twinkies than work anyway.
Now that’s all shot to hell.
Some people just can’t win.
How many people would have been thankful for those jobs and these fools act like they were put into slavery or something!
Cool. I’m with them: I don’t care, either. I don’t buy any of their products and never have. There are 2 retail outlets w/in 50 miles of me. But my state voted for Ds and so did the neighboring state w/an outlet.
Glad they achieved this victory. I wish them every similar success in the future.
Free Obama-iPads next. You watch
But a 50% pay cut on unemployment is worth it because Lamont and his ilk can sit on their asses and don't have to listen to the bosses tell him what will happen because of the union strike,
In the meantime, those who needed this job are now scared to death about losing everything. But, Lamont doesn't have to hear it anymore.
Every Bakery Oven Operator job on the web. 85 jobs available.
Good luck to the idiot in landing one of 85 positions available in the nation, all presumably at lower pay that he was making at union wages.
Which leads to a question that's plagued us for years...Is Wonder Bread really bread?
Let’s see 8% pay cut or a 100% pay cut, .... wait I’m thinking, not sure, well 100 is more than 8, so let’s go with the 100%.
Waaaaaah. Booooooo Hoooooo. Sob sob sob.
Only a total MORON thinks losing ALL income, ALL health insurance, ALL pension contributions, etc. is better than working with the company to keep a job.
Enjoy giving fellatio at truck stops you idiots.
HA! About half of those simply hired.com job postings are duplicates for “oven operator” and a lot of them are for “oven helper”.
Calling the pun police!
high five for the Jayne Cobb reference!
“My wife sees these folks at the Rocky Mount Wal-Mart all the time... using the EBT to buy better food than shes buying with honest money, then taking it out to load it up in a better car than shes driving”
Just wait. The time is coming when it’s gonna be hard on everyone. For the EBT crowd, it’s gonna be hell.
After Obama's 2009 inauguration he got slammed for appearing on O'Reilly and saying,I want to know why $150 million is necessary of taxpayers money to have an inauguration. A hundred and fifty million dollars could have gone into the private sector and, with the condition that America is in right now, and done a lot more good than a celebration.
I can’t stand these dumb clucks. I’m looking for work and these guys should have counted their blessings. Tell you what, if it was up to me, I’d hire people who did not vote for Obama and if I could, I’d lay off the ones who did.
