Swedish child's appendix bursts after 20 hour ER wait

A nine-year-old boy with appendicitis was made to wait more than 20 hours for surgery at the emergency ward of a Stockholm-area children's hospital before his appendix finally burst.

"The only treatment he received was morphine and paracetamol tablets so he didn't die from the pain," Jesper, the father of nine-year-old William Strömgren, told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

William arrived at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital in Stockholm last Thursday after suffering stomach pains for days. He was immediately diagnosed with appendicitis, but then nothing happened.

After having his operation repeatedly pushed back by doctors, William's desperate parents were told by the chief surgeon that an operation would only be possible if it was carried out "the old-fashioned way", rather than using a procedure which resulted in less scarring.

"There was only one overnight operating room to handle all of Stockholm's children," William's father told DN.

"I'm convinced that if we hadn't demanded to speak with the chief surgeon we would have had to wait yet another night."

But by the time doctors operated on the nine-year-old, his appendix had already burst, resulting in an extended hospital stay, two weeks of missed school, and no ice hockey for young William until after Christmas.

"If they had operated sooner, I'd be home now," the nine-year-old told the paper.

Employees at the hospital acknowledged that patient safety is in jeopardy.

"Tough budget cuts, staff shortages, and recruitment difficulties have unfortunately put more pressure on surgeries and meant that children and parents have had to wait longer as a result," a hospital employee told DN.

Ah yes, Mother Gaia. Those poor souls who died were meant to die. It’s all part of the natural cycle.

I think I must have been “Twinkie” before Twinkies were named “Twinkie”. - Yeah. Twinkies will survive; they can’t “go good” (much like yogurt left in the refrigerator a long time). - Ugh. When Twinkie’s appendix bursts, it’s a mess! I guess I’ll be a Mexican Twinkie if the deal goes through.

My younger brother was taken to Kaiser complaining of a stomach ache. They prescribed a laxative.

As a Boy Scout I knew better. My brother had his appendix out at 2:30 am after he was taken to an emergency room.

guys, take probiotics regularly to reduce chances of appendicitis. the appendix is your gi tract’s reset button and replenisher of good bacteria, and by allowing probiotics to drip in there periodically along the normal route, you can ensure whatever good bacteria in there outnumber and control any bad bacteria in there.

Where was Michael Fat-B@$t@rd Moore’s jet? If he really cared, he could have airlifted the kid to Cuba.

Make someone spend an extra 10 years in school and let them make what a city councilman makes, and you will get the dregs.

Is that what's on the City Councilman's reported wages on the W-2, or what he really makes?

The 1% in any country will always be fine but that is no reason to hate them.

What you should hate are the looters (politicians) that use the moochers (welfare recipients /subsidized businesses, including farmers/ politicaly privileged) to stay in power by buying votes with YOUR money.

It’s already here. I waited for ten hours in an Idaho ER last October with appendicitis.

.....Swedes, like people in other democracies are trainable from birth to accept 9 years old kids un-necessarily dying in government run medical centers! And, Mom and Dad are probably as lefty as you can get, but the kid doesn’t deserve it.

Swedish and Euros in general are also trainable, and have been trained since birth, that guns are bad, so they have no guns! We have 300 million of them and, by and large, know damn well how to use them! And, most of these US gun owners are not too trainable and unlike Swedes, they hate government in all it’s forms, at least as it has demonstrated itself for the past fifty years.

There’s a trigger out there somewhere for CWII! Maybe it (the trigger) is 9 years old kid’s dying in Obama’s and Pelosi’s and Reid’s affirmative action staffed hospitals!! IF I were any one of the 3 of them, I would not retire in Texas. I can just hear the sound of 300 million guns being cocked at the same time.

Seems like appendicitis gets the “wait and see” treatment a lot. Back in early 80s my hubby’s appendix burst while he was “on the road” headed for a gig at Myrtle Beach. He knew it was his appendix and had the guys in the band to call for an ambulance on the CB. He was rushed to hospital and lay in the emergency room for 5 hours before a surgeon came in and threw a hissy fit. Hubby almost bought the big one that time. The doctor said it was a miracle. They had to wash down his whole abdominal cavity and didn’t expect him to live. Only the Lord.

For some reason that pic reminds me of the disturbing murals painted at DIA airport.

"Tough budget cuts, staff shortages, and recruitment difficulties have unfortunately put more pressure on surgeries and meant that children and parents have had to wait longer as a result," a hospital employee told DN.

That's a misprint. What the employee really said is, "central planning in the medical field has meant that children and parents have had to wait longer as a result."
