Rand Paul and Israel: An Exchange
Commentary Magazine ^ | 11.18.2012 | Jonathan S. Tobin

Posted on 11/19/2012 6:41:09 PM PST by Nachum

Last week, I wrote about the potential impact that the growing influence of Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will have on the ability of Republicans to portray themselves as a solidly pro-Israel party. Senator Paul has written to respond to that piece. My response follows.

Jonathan S. Tobin’s Nov. 9 column, “Will Rand Paul Hijack the Pro-Israel GOP?” makes some wildly speculative assumptions about me, my positions concerning our ally, Israel, and the Republican Party’s future. Since Mr. Tobin took it upon himself to image some of my positions, I thought it best to set the record straight by stating what they actually are.

Israel is a strong and important ally of the United States, and we share many mutual security interests. I believe we should stand by our ally, but where I think sometimes American commentators get confused is that I do not think Israel should be dictated to by the United States. I think that has happened too often, and it has been to the detriment of Israel. Too often we have coerced Israel into trading land for peace, or other false bargains. When President Obama stood before the world in 2011 to demand that Israel act against her own strategic interest, I denounced this as unnecessary meddling. As I wrote in May of that year: “For President Obama to stand up today and insist that Israel should once again give up land, security and sovereignty for the possibility of peace shows an arrogance that is unmatched even in our rich history of foreign policy.”

How to explain the fact that 70% of Jewish voters voted for Branco Bamma?

The rise of Jewish anti-semitism(yes, it sadly does exist).

85% of American Jews who live in Israel voted for Romney.

Orthodox Jews are dependable republican voters. As fun as it is to jump on the American Jews with that 70% thing, (it always pops up within 3 posts on any Israel thread)
It just basically makes them the typical New York or California voter, where laarge populations live.
The typical non observant Jew is basically nothing more than an SEIU or Ivy mentality as a voter. The ones who actually follow their faith are no more unreliable than Catholics.

Too bad to see them always lumped in with secular jews who share almost nothing with them except a last name and a few holidays. Especially for those in Israel who knew exactly what Obama is to Israel.

Oh, thank you Nachum. I keep a running apology for being unable on this dang cell, to do my own work.

I like Rand P. I could be dead wrong, or dead right, but Rand strikes me as being someone raised with the country’s interests in mind and the intellect to see this nation through a multi sided prism of our history, world history, political history and movements. He didn’t get plucked from nowhereville, didn’t appear by circumstance, but went on to make a life quite apart from political ambition and “grooming”. I like everything he has to say that I’ve heard.

People are suspicious of everyone now. We keep hoping for a hero to help us. In the end, it will be our own prayers.

Tobin, liberals have bankrupted US. Our unborn children are already indentured servants. We are past the point of buying friends in the Middle East. IF we do not get our own house in order Israel will be all on its own alone.

Sadly you twist what the senator said for one sole purpose to mark him as being an enemy. Well, Mr. Liberal Tobin your credibility is dissolved in an attempt to ridicule the senator while ignoring what liberals have done since they took control of the US government spending and policy back in 2007.

It IS absurd. The Israelis gave up Gaza; and lo and behold, Hamas is using Gaza as a launching pad for rocket attacks on Israel. This happens every time they forfeit land for “peace”. It’s not like they have all that much land to “give” to the Muslims (who, incidentally already possess a glut of land all around Israel). - Obama seems a bit naive about this matter.

Wonder why Tobin ignores where Obama spends US money with his US charge card.

Amen, dear brother. I couldn’t agree with you more.

I am continuing in prayer just to hide in God and beg to be able to stand
under fire. Wisdom for the times comes only from God, and He is being asked to leave. Thank you, Nachum, for the reminder.

Good post. I believe you are correct.

Israel couldn’t be much of a priority to the 70% of Jewish American voters who cast their vote for Obama - a guy who hangs out with rabid anti-Semites, goes easy on Iran and snubbed the Israel on state visits. He’s really the worst imaginable for Israel, and they still pulled the lever and wrote the checks to him. Weird.
