Government wants all Americans between 15-64 to take HIV test

WASHINGTON — There's a new push to make testing for the AIDS virus as common as cholesterol checks.

Americans ages 15 to 64 should get an HIV test at least once — not just people considered at high risk for the virus, an independent panel that sets screening guidelines proposed Monday.

The draft guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are the latest recommendations that aim to make HIV screening simply a routine part of a check-up, something a doctor can order with as little fuss as a cholesterol test or a mammogram. Since 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has pushed for widespread, routine HIV screening.

Yet not nearly enough people have heeded that call: Of the more than 1.1 million Americans living with HIV, nearly 1 in 5 — almost 240,000 people — don't know it. Not only is their own health at risk without treatment, they could unwittingly be spreading the virus to others.

The updated guidelines will bring this long-simmering issue before doctors and their patients again — emphasizing that public health experts agree on how important it is to test even people who don't think they're at risk, because they could be.

"It allows you to say, 'This is a recommended test that we believe everybody should have. We're not singling you out in any way,'" said task force member Dr. Douglas Owens of Stanford University and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.

And if finalized, the task force guidelines could extend the number of people eligible for an HIV screening without a copay in their doctor's office, as part of free preventive care under the Obama administration's health care law.

Would not want to "single out" anyone. We'll do everything to fight AIDS except point out that certain practices are just unhealthy and should be avoided.

With our government run healthcare system, how long before the “recommendation” becomes mandatory?

Follow the money.

I would bet that the largest manufacturer of tests or their CEO is a major Democrat or contributor.

How about we start by requiring all sodomites, prostitutes and porn actors be tested for HIV. That should reduce the unknown carriers by about 99%.

You’d still have druggies to worry about. Maybe that’s how they’ll push decriminalization.

“If you get tested for HIV, you can do all the heroin you want!” That’s the logic that nanny-statists love.

Actually, it’s not a bad idea. I want the ability to quarantine people with AIDS. I don’t want them spreading the disease if it comes to that(i.e. giving blood).

Another sleight of hand government program to inculcate the general population with the idea that HIV and AIDS are just everyday health issues that can affect anyone.

Sort of like the flu or a sore tummy.

They will continue to do whatever it takes to mainstream sexual perversion.

In the medical field (as others) the “independent” panels that set “guidelines” are formed of people and organizations who seek the power to profit themselves by the rules they recommend.

Let’s not forget the MILLIONS of people who will experience the trauma of false positives.

They want everyone’s DNA and this is a ploy to get it. Part and parcel of the type of control they are starting to exert. And to think that just a few years ago this would be called homophobic. Don’t we all just love the brave new world the One is building? /s

Why not a sodium pentothal shot for all politicians? That would be much more helpful to the body politic than this cockeyed idea.

The VA is already doing this.

I was surprised when my doctor asked me to take the test. I said no, why should I? I'm not a homosexual, and have been with the same woman for 30 years. She said ok, forget it.

I have used this CDC recommendation to teach students Bayes’ Rule. The problem with applying such a screening test to the entire adult population is that HIV infection is relatively uncommon (fewer than 1 per 100) and the office-based test has a nontrivial false positive rate. So, the probability that you really are HIV positive, given that you initially test positive with the cheap office test, is fairly low.

Doesn't really matter. I have had but one partner for the last 30 years and vice versa. The Gubmint can kiss my arse.
