(Mayor Moocher) Newark Mayor Cory Booker agrees to live off food stamps for a MONTH
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | 20 November 2012 | Meghan Keneally

Mayor Cory Booker is known for his social media savvy, having helped direct emergency services in Newark, New Jersey to stranded citizens during snowstorms and field questions during Hurricane Sandy. Now he's taking the talk offline as he bet a Twitter trash-talker that he could live healthfully on food stamps for a month. The Democratic politician got into a dispute with a woman on Twitter who took issue with his dispelling of some free advice via Plutarch.

'An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics,' Booker wrote on Sunday morning. User @MWadeNC took issue with the quote, as it could be interpreted as a call to redistribute wealth. The debate progressed from there, with the woman arguing that it is not the place of the government to insure that everyone maintains high nutritional standards, but Booker responded that it is when it comes to children who need to be 'ready 2 learn' at school.

The argument took it's marked turn when the Twitter user made a slight about food stamp recipients, saying 'why is there a family today that is "too poor to afford breakfast"? are they not already receiving food stamps?' Booker responded: 'Lets you and I try to live on food stamps in New Jersey (high cost of living) and feed a family for a week or month. U game?'

Following up on the logistics, the user- whose real name has yet to be revealed- agreed and the Mayor called for a referee to make sure that the challenge was upheld. The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, which is already organizing a similar challenge for its students, agreed to serve as a moderator.

That is more than a lot of families spend on food

Considering that I just ordered a large Jet's pizza for $16 that will give me lunch and dinner for the next 3 days (bleh!) I could lease a car on the left over monies.......

Corey Booker is Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s hero (remember him . . . “Michael Jackson’s rabbi?”). Believe it or not, Boteach actually ran as the Republican nominee for a House seat from New Jersey. I’m glad he lost. Can you imagine the damage that would have done to conservative/Jewish relations?

Food stamps were meant to be a supplement. People on food stamps typically receive welfare checks, or social security checks, or some type of modest pension. The publicity stunts where someone tries to buy groceries for a month on $200 worth of food stamps are just that, stunts. They were never meant to be the only way a person bought groceries.

wow. A single homeless man could probably get over a hundred bucks a month. Most people don’t even know the homeless get food stamps.

Red beans, white beans, black beans
Whole turkey, whole chicken
Whole wheat bread
Inexpensive vegetables
Potatoes

These people are pathetic if they couldn't make tasty, healthful meals for an entire family on that amount for a month. I guess they would have starved in the Depression.

MY sister’s family bit the bullet during hard times a few decades ago and went on food stamps for a few months. She was amazed and appalled at the sudden increase in their food budget, and stocked up on several YEARS worth of storable staples.

We live on less than that with my family of 6. In Fairbanks Alaska. Pretty much everything has to be shipped or trucked long distance to get here.
That much is criminal.

Corey Booker as mayor is invited to round-the-clock banquets each day of his term - he won’t be able to fit any food from food stamps

I prefer black-and-white to shades of gray.

Do you have any idea the nonsense Boteach has been into in his life?

Not to mention, in some jurisdictions, the kids are even given backpacks at school on Fridays which contain food to be taken home for the weekend.

So food stamp people are eating better than us. Figures.

Have you looked at the stuff they buy? Apparently, the store brand is beneath them....

Okay, so we spend more than that for our family of four, but we pay for it out of our own pockets, and eat lots of gourmet, and almost never eat out. I have in the past and believe I could again eat well on $600/month if needed. I had a friend years ago who very temporarily received food stamps in order to get by after getting out of a very abusive marriage. She received about $320 for herself and 3 children (all too old for her to qualify for WIC). She was very frugal and saved a generous portion of each month’s benefits to help supplement for many months after she went back to work, which she did as soon as possible. There are too many fat people on food stamps and disability.

Does anyone think that this is a real challenge?

I’m sure it’s prearranged, with the shill and Booker both failing miserably. To prove how poor the SNAP benefits are, and how they need to be increased.

The Food-Stamp Crime Wave

The number of food-stamp recipients has soared to 44 million from 26 million in 2007. Not surprisingly, fraud and abuse are rampant..Millionaires are now legally entitled to collect food stamps as long as they have little or no monthly income. Thirty-five states have abolished asset tests for most food-stamp recipients. These and similar “paperwork reduction” reforms advocated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are turning the food-stamp program into a magnet for abuses and absurdities.

From the USDA website : “Thirty-five states have abolished asset test”

sounds like you can have a home and lot, but not more than $2,000 (or $3,000) in a bank account.

“Households may have $2,000 in countable resources, such as a bank account, or $3000 in countable resources if at least one person is age 60 or older, or is disabled. However, certain resources are NOT counted, such as a home and lot..”

So just go spend down your bank account and buy some 22” spinner rims for your Escalade, and you’ll be fine.
