Father ‘appalled’ by disrespectful Facebook pic
By Jessica Heslam | Wednesday, November 21, 2012 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

The mortified father of a Plymouth woman under cyber assault for posting a photo of herself flipping the bird at sacred Arlington National Cemetery said his only daughter apologizes to anyone she’s offended — especially soldiers.

The controversial Facebook photo shows Lindsey Stone with her mouth wide open and giving the finger near what appears to be the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a sign that reads: “Silence and Respect.”

“She’s totally apologetic. She apologizes to anybody she’s offended,” her father, Peter Stone, told me last night. “She was reacting, I guess, to the sign instead of the place and didn’t intend it to be what it turned out to be.

“She had a lack of judgment,” added her father, who learned of the controversy yesterday. “I think they were just being funny, which is sad. It’s not how she or the family feels by any means.”

The photo wound up in the blogosphere and has sparked a “Fire Lindsey Stone” Facebook page that had fetched more than 9,000 likes as of last night.

Stone and Jamie Schuh, the woman who snapped the photo, have been put on unpaid leave from their jobs at the Hyannis-based LIFE Inc. — a nonprofit that helps adults with special needs — while it investigates the incident.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the organization said the photo was taken last month when 40 residents and eight staff members visited Washington, D.C. The nonprofit said it learned of the photo, posted on Lindsey Stone’s personal Facebook page, Monday night.

Lindsey Stone, a 30-year-old single woman who lives with her parents, wasn’t home last night. Peter Stone said his daughter feels “terrible” about jeopardizing her job.

“She really enjoyed what she was doing,” said Stone, 61, a retired ironworker. “All her clients at work love her. To have her put something like this on her page, I just can’t believe it.

“The way I see her, and the way I’ve witnessed her for 30 years, is not at all what that photo shows,” he added.

Stone said he was “appalled” when he first saw the photo. “I certainly don’t condone anything like that,” he said.

When asked whether his daughter regrets the photo, Peter Stone said “very much so.”

Lindsey Stone and Schuh issued an apology last night.

“We never meant any disrespect to any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly. It was meant merely as a visual pun, intending to depict the exact opposite of what the sign said, and had absolutely nothing to do with the location it was taken or the people represented there,” the statement said.

Her dad said yesterday he didn’t think it was “meant to be a statement, that’s for sure.”

He added: “She’s just devastated. She’s all upset ... but there are ramifications to every action.”

I agree, and when it’s all said and done, I think she will be.

This photo is endemic of social media in contemporary privacy conversations. She probably intended for this to be a joke seen by few and instead it turned into a national conversation being seen and discussed by the entire nation.

So many of today’s youth think they are immune from controversy yet so many incidents of youth being suspended or expelled from schools, kicked out of universities, and fired from jobs have been reported that you would think there would be a national outcry AGAINST social media; yet the beat goes on and kids continue to post their stupidity for the world to see and comment upon.

There's a very telling piece of information.

Immature? YES! Girl? NO! Why can’t today’s society hold people accountable and responsible for their actions. Stone is an immature WOMAN and should be held accountable. Stone and her companion decided to make their actions very pubic on Facebook and now the pubic is voicing their opinion and asking that she be reprimanded in the only way they can: termination. Otherwise her shallow apology will be the only reprimand she receives. Hopefully her actions follow her for some time: “Aren’t you that Stone who shot a bird at the tomb of the unknown soldier?”. Good luck with that Ms. stone.

Yes and some people seem to forget when you post a “private” (direct) tweet on Twitter EVERYONE can see it. Or a reg. tweet. So many people have gotten into trouble for that—and shown off their real personalities and politics (often
hateful)

It’s disrespectful behavior, even in “oh it’s just a joke” mode. Would someone at a funeral get up and do a crazy dance or start shouting or do an Occupy-style MIC CHECK!!!? To use Rodney Dangerfield’s catch phrase, many today SHOW “no respect. No respect at all.”

If you read the details, you’ll see that this kid is really a thirty year old woman. She’s a disgrace to this country.

Liar. She made the mistake of thinking that the entire country thinks like the people in New England, and is stunned by the blowback. (Comments in NE papers are generally sympathetic to this woman...'what's the big deal?")

I have immediate family buried in Arlington, and I am beyond p*ssed at this skank. G-d deliver me from New England.

She's just upset at the negative effect it had on her employment, with no genuine regret over the action.

Considering the number of people who have had their lives destroyed over making a remark somebody decided was "racist", or for openly opposing gay marriage, I have no sympathy for this twerp.

Isn't it? And this: Peter Stone said his daughter feels “terrible” about jeopardizing her job. Yes, I suspect THAT is what she feels bad about. How did Rhett Butler put it? "You're like the thief who isn't sorry he stole, but is terribly, terribly sorry he's going to jail."

People have lost their jobs for far smaller offenses just because the PC crowd didn’t like them.

The fact that it came from her father is disgusting and I think much more of a commentary on the state of these parents than the behavior of the children.

This “woman” is no more a woman than I am an elder at 32. She’s likely a holder of a Bachelor degree in Women’s Studies from DeVry or some such thing. What a disgrace.

Let’s include the Howie Carr ping list folks on this too...and btw I don’t know who’s in for him today yet (McPhee? Avi?
Col Hunt? Joe Battenfeld? Maybe even Holli Robichaud who was in for Jeff the other day? We’ll find out)

and by the way the use of “girl” rather than woman—that was taken right from the RKO page. They mis-spelled immature though
>>An immaute girl takes a crude photo
but yes, a WOMAN who should be responsible

Employers? This airhead is toxic. Keep that in mind when her resume crosses your desk.

Oh boooo hoooo Lindsay. As a teen I got fired by the produce manager for throwing away some old potatoes that were sprouting eyes. If you get fired (deservedly so) then deal with it. Be a little smarter and wiser next time.
