Slate Column: Bring Back Petraeus. He’s already been humiliated and rehabilitated.

I have a great idea whom Barack Obama should nominate as his next CIA director: Gen. David Petraeus. With that simple announcement, Obama could strike a blow for civil liberties and against the silly and destructive sexual Puritanism that has taken down so many public figures. Since Petraeus’ departure both Democrats and Republicans have been mourning the loss of a public servant of extraordinary ability.

So let’s mourn no more. The president can say that when news of Petraeus’ affair first broke he reluctantly accepted the general’s resignation. But as it has become clear that the events were wholly of a private nature and national security was not breached, he is reinstating his CIA director. (OK, we probably have to wait until the CIA finishes its new investigation into whether Petraeus used agency resources to conduct the affair, but investigators have leaked that they don’t expect any criminal charges.)

Because Obama is a man with such a blemish-free private life, this could be a “Nixon in China” moment. It would be impossible for a Bill Clinton, say, to strike such a blow for sexual sanity. But given that even that insatiable sex fiend is back in the arena and much revered (by some), surely that means we have grown up enough to realize that just because you’re in public life doesn’t mean every aspect of your marriage is fair game. Yes, it’s been titillating to read the farcical details of Petraeus’ fling, and no one got more vicarious pleasure than I. But in the end the Petraeus so-called scandal is just the old story of a long-married man who strayed with a younger woman, a woman who unfortunately for all went a little nuts. It certainly should not have been a career ender.

Hey, idiot - no one asked Petraeus to resign because of our Puritanical sexual ethics. He offered his resignation and Obama accepted it. It never was about sex, moron, but about compromising classified information.

I am so SICK of these people!!!

One OBVIOUS question the MSM never asks is this:

If the Libyan government warned IN ADVANCE that something bad was coming, and security there had asked for for help multiple times before 9/11, and Ambassador Stevens was concerned enough to journal his fears about the situation falling apart, what in the world was he doing on that day going there with no security?

Why would he do that?

Petraeus was a threat to Obama, and so he had him destroyed. Sadly, Petraeus was weak enough to get caught up in a honey pot.

Lots of questions - very few (honest) answers. That is the transparent Obama administration for you.

Obama could strike a blow for civil liberties

Libthink -- equating "civil liberties" to a major illicit act that placed himself, the lives of Americans and countless secrets at grave risk of compromise.

Winston Smith is a fictional character and the protagonist of George Orwell’s 1949 novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four”.

Working within the Ministry of Truth, Winston’s job was to change the back story and historical records to reflect the changes in the official political positions. If the war with one opponent ended, and an alliance was made, then the war was redirected against the former ally. This made the change in all the records essential, so nobody discovers the discrepancy. All the old records were thrown into the “memory hole”.

But then Winston begins to question what he is doing, and joins in a subversive group. One compromise after another leads to his exposure, and he is brought into the central directorate, put under severe scrutiny, subjected to extreme personal pressure, and finally broken.

Then he is “forgiven” by Big Brother, who extends an offer to Winston to return, but now as a broken and reliable minion of the regime.

Nah, no parallel to David Petraeus. Just another isolated coincidence.

he was never any good at the job, we were apparently blindsided in the attack, and he fully supports unlimited surveillance inside the US.

As a general he sucked too. All he did in Iraq was side with the Shiite majority in their civil war. When they won with us on their side, the fighting came to an end.

In Afghanistan his main contribution besides his camp follower was writing the worst rules of engagement a military force has ever had to fight under. If there is ANY possibility that a civilian can get hurt, supporting arms cannot be used. He lets grunts die under fire when arty and air could save them,,period.

He is an academic who got promoted for the war fighting doctrine of trying to become friends with the enemy. Worthless.

Petraeus was an Obama groupie. His wife was a hard core democrat. His favorite girl in Tampa is a big dem buddy of Kerry and Obama. And Petraeus favorite operational environment was east coast liberal universties.

He’s no threat to Obama, he’s on Obamas team.

obama should appoint Jill Kelley. She’s obviously well connected around the world, and her appointment would send a clear message that the CIA is a joke and America no longer gives a chit.

I know it’s hard, but do you realize now you were lied to? Republican leaders pretended to be against Obamacare. Now that the election is over, every day a new Republican is coming out revealing the love Obamacare.
