RIO DE JANEIRO Media reports say a Brazilian bridegroom bled to death at his wedding reception when he tripped and fell on an empty glass of beer.

The G1 news website says the freak accident occurred early Monday morning some six hours after navy sergeant Fabio Jefferson dos Santos Maciel and Geise Guimaraes tied the knot.

Yes, that is not a “freak accident”, that is just another case of people doing dumb things and encountering predictable results.

Well, a glass in your pants is an obviously bad idea, but cutting the artery wasn’t a guaranteed result, even if the glass broke.

fell on an empty glass of beer

It was either a glass of beer or it was empty -- it can't be both!

An empty glass that had had beer in it... or once broken it no longer held the beer...

Wow, okay, I'm not carrying empty glasses of beer in my pocket anymore... ummm, WAIT!... I never do that anyway... Besides, I'm trying to imagine exactly how I would have to fall and land in order to break a glass that did happen to be in my pocket, such that the glass shards could be driven deep into my leg or abdomen and sever my femoral vein/artery. The only thing I can come up with is if I took a flyin' swandive out of a second story window and landed on rocks below. Just sayin'. The cops might want to look at this cockamamie story very, very closely.

Are you hppy to see me or is that a glass of beer you have in your pocket?

Rolled up newspaper or a banana would have been a better idea.

Maybe a rushed machine-aided translation of the Brazilian Portuguese. The Portuguese term for a “beer glass” is the same that would be used for “glass of beer.”

Note to self: Never put a beer glass in your pocket.

Might be credible depending on how the shards formed — a stab in the groin could result just by falling on one’s face, especially if already over-beered and klutzy.

If dancing with a beer glass in one’s pocket is a Brazilian custom, they ought to consider switching to Lexan.

Another “custom” - idiots dancing with drink in their hand.
Spilling drinks on compadres and floor.

Perhaps they carry it so that they can “drink” to a particularly winsome dance partner right on the spot? (Then what goes in the other pocket, a beer bottle?)

Now that’s disrespectful... unless they’re rednecks (just kidding about rednecks. sort of)

If they’re rednecks, the bride’s cousin invited as a guest to the wedding already married her there and then.

Interesting that it’s not an “empty glass”, but an “empty glass of beer”! Sad for the man’s family, including the newly widowed newlywed bride.

Well we know two things for sure. Since it was in Brazil it was caused by global warming and of course, it was Bush’s fault.

Some ‘old’ comedian (Skelton?) had a routine of a drunk with a bottle of whiskey in his pocket.
Someone pushes him down and he gets up and feels liquid on his arse.
Crying, he says damn, the guy with him says “Quit moving around and the bleeding will slow down”...

“BLOOD? Thank God, it is only blood”.

No one had a tie for a tourniquet?

If it was high enough in the groin there might not be a good place to put the tourniquet. After that you are stuck with the option of packing in the wound which takes a lot more training.

As an aside, I just took a day of training from a couple of SF qualified medics where they talked about tourniquet placement. The old school way was to place tourniquets 2 inches above the wound. The new thought on the subject is to put all tourniquets high on the limb.

The femoral artery and vein course down through the groin area on either side. If quick and appropriate pressure is applied to this region plus use of a tourniquet perhaps this bleeding out death could have been averted.
