Pennsylvania's Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is slashing the hours of 400 adjunct instructors, support staff, and part-time instructors to dodge paying for Obamacare.
"It's kind of a double whammy for us because we are facing a legal requirement [under the new law] to get health care and if the college is reducing our hours, we don't have the money to pay for it," said adjunct biology professor Adam Davis.
On Tuesday, CCAC employees were notified that Obamacare defines full-time employees as those working 30 hours or more per week and that on Dec. 31 temporary part-time employees will be cut back to 25 hours.

The article said it won’t be long until others are doing this. What do they mean, it won’t be long? I am an Adult Education Teacher. I was hired in April, 2007 as a contracted employee of our public board of education. I was hired at $18 per hour, no paid time off. Holidays, snow days, school closings, etc. = no pay No insurance or retirement plan. In my 6th year, my pay is still $18 per hour. There is another instructor (with Master’s degree) hired just like me.
If a teacher is absent, I cover. If the other instructor is absent, I cover. When the other instructor had baby, I worked overtime for 7 weeks.
This is happening a lot here. Regular teachers get all the benefits, paid time off and retirement plus raises annually.
BTW, the other contracted employee is a young person who was encouraged by our politicians to borrow $40,000 in student loans to get her Master’s degree as a teacher. She’s been trying to get hired on as a regular teacher for 7 years with no luck. They pay her just like me as part-time contracted services. What is even worse, when a teaching job comes open, they won’t count her time here as experience for seniority in hiring.

GOP should play political jujitsu. Dems want to tax the rich. Fine, accept more taxes on millionaires and in return get cuts in entitlements. That way if the Dems refuse, they become the gridlock after the GOP accepted their demands for millionaire tax, Why accept such a deal, the Dem demands will boomerang on the Dem states. States with high tax rates include CT, NY, NJ, MA, CA and IL to name a few. Imagine the New York liberal types who already pay high state taxes now saddled with higher fed taxes. Worst local businesses will pass the cost onto them in the form of higher prices, or they close up and move. These states will lose businesses and quality of life will suffer even more. This will hasten the high tax states demise. I bet the high tax liberal state Senators will balk once their staffs go over the numbers on their rich liberal donors and businessmen.

Teacher friend, you’re still young enough to take a civil service exam and get hired for a local, state or federal job with a pension and health care.
I’m 61 and getting ready to look into Social Security. The other contracted instructor is only 27.
I spent my career as an accountant until I could no longer tolerate the IRS and watching the demise of small business among my clients due to the cost of taxes and insurance.
Teaching is my late in life job. It has been enjoyable to help young adults who need second chance.
Academics getting smacked by Obama reality - I love it.....
Supply and Demand. Any job where the employer has an ample supply of employees will likely go this route. My son had a job at a newly opened Frisch’s - only the managers had more than 30 hours per week. Nearly all the employees only got 10 to 20 hours per week, they just kept hiring more people while limiting the amount each could work so as not to come under the mandate, nor to be accused of later cutting hours to avoid the upcoming mandate.
I had a discussion with an educated idiot - CPA, but also a Government employee. He was convinced employers wouldn’t go this route, that it didn’t make any sense because to his understanding the new law was advantageous to employers by letting them deduct 100% of healthcare costs vs. a lower amount today. He just couldn’t comprehend that employers not paying now don’t see an advantage to paying it in the future even with a tax deduction - he also likely didn’t understand that costs are going up because a qualified plan must meet Obama’s edicts. These Kool-Aid drinkers may never get it and I can’t have much sympathy for them. Maybe they will wake up when they have to get a second job just to make ends meet. What’s really outrageous is with so many employers hiring more people for less hours - Obama will claim to have reduced unemployment.

I’ve long thought that there is an opportunity to take back at least a portion of academia. Many community colleges will hire adjunct faculty with only an MA. I have mine in American History and took an adjunct position at my local CC. I only get 1-3 classes per semester, but in those classes, my students are taught to think critically and they are exposed to conservative ideas in a way that they have never experienced. I find it very gratifying when I hear from some at the end of each semester how I opened their eyes. If only a portion of Freepers with an advanced degree could somehow get hired on as part-time faculty, we can begin to turn the future back to us, one classroom at a time. This does require a lot of dedication or need. I took the position in addition to my full-time job, because as you indicate, there is no way in hell I could support a family of 4 on adjunct wages....but if some Freepers are bored or looking to make a little extra cash on the side....
I thought that the law applied if you had over 50 full time employees. Is the whole college part time wage hourly wage earners. Wouldn’t a salaried (administration and tenured people) employee be full time by definition?
