msnbc ^ | november 21, 2012 | msnbc staff

Every family’s got one, at least. That hardcore conservative who makes every Thanksgiving get-together a nightmare by sounding off, unprompted, on how liberals are ruining this country with their taxing and their spending and their gay-marrying, and how back in my day blah blah blah.

Usually you just keep your head down and stare into your turkey and try not to make eye contact with anyone. Then the next morning in the shower you remember what you should have said in response.

But this year’s going to be different. Why? Because here at MSNBC, we’ve anticipated crazy Uncle Gary’s top talking points, and provided you with the concise, factual, snappy rebuttals you need to finally shut him up once and for all.

So without further ado, we present: MSNBC’s Top 10 Comebacks For Use Against The Family Conservative

wish us all luck! When my dad gets a little wine in him he starts holding forth about how people don’t “appreciate” ubama, paying people “a living wage” and how it makes other countries feel unequal if they don’t have nuclear weapons....pretty maddening

“May save the hospital money, but how does it save the country money?”

They will spout the ill-informed mantra of the left who think that you can prevent hospitalizations by ‘preventative medicine’. I don't have the time to point out the stupidity in that belief right now, but it is nonetheless stupid.

Our family had the good sense to purge itself of all the liberals back during the McCarthy era.

We simply don't invite them to get togethers.

If a conservative uses those setup lines, they deserve to get zingered. If you use ad hominem or emotional arguments or straw man, they can resort to straw man and “win” the moment.

If you want to engage them when they start using them (and yes usually THEY do), call out the phony traps they use, then use logic and facts.

But of course remember if you argue with a fool, after a few minutes its hard to tell the difference between you.

I don’t expect a lot of union chatter from the union members this year. Their ballot proposals were crushed in Michigan and they know that large numbers of their union brethren helped to do it.

Good one! But I would be inclined to say “oh you mean climate scientist like Al Gore?” or maybe I'd say “I think what the earth needs is more cow bell” and then change the subject.

Nonsensical comments need a nonsensical reply.

exactly

we do ot have t ring politics up but if they do then we have facts and we at least have our duty to spak up after others have given their lives for this country, they madre this country, they gavce their lives for the better good.

From the founding fathers to right up to today and I won;t say anything about poltics but boy if they do I will mention facts and do it in such a way without losing it but being nice as the left hates it when facts are given in a nice way.

Thank you to you ALL here who have mailed, made calls and got out the word about this country, thank you to those who will not be silenced but do speak up and thnak you for never giving up conservative principles which made this country great.

Thank you to all who stands against tyranny, socialism, communism, Marxism and other disgusting social agendas

Thank you

I am lucky, it is just three of us.

We are conservative and remind each other never to say these things outside.

My personal favorite is the claim that tobacco companies cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars because of the diseases they cause.

If you actually run the numbers, people dying early from cancer or heart disease saves the country a LOT of money. What is really expensive to society is those people who live to an advanced age, consuming a great deal of health care in their final decades.

Thanksgiving at my parents house is the opposite and it is my supposedly disable brother who trys to provoke arguments regarding big business, environmentalism, veganism (half the Thanksgiving menu is made to suit him).

If the conversation starts with “Well, any thinking person would have to agree.....” You can bet I’m not gunna agree. BUT I do not suffer fools either and I just give a knowing smile and don’t say anything.

Pretty weak "zingers" for the most part. I'm sure only a few examples make my point:

You Say: “Obama spent all of 2009 and much of 2010 trying to compromise with Republicans on the stimulus, health-care reform, deficit reduction, and financial reform..."

Uh huh. Even the dullest MSNBC drone knows that "trying to compromise" means "demanding that the Republicans accept his programs without question".

6. When He Says: “If Obama raises taxes on the job creators, it’s going to force them to start laying people off. Is that what you want?”

There is simply no rebuttal to this, as this is simply a restatement of today's news. You can either believe that the news re layoffs at Poppa John's, Applebees, et al, et many al, is something that is actually happening, or you can wave your Congressional Research Service white paper in the air like it's Captain America's shield.

You Say: “Actually, the law includes numerous cost-saving ideas, and studies have found that it’ll reduce the amount we spend on health care.

Indeed. Let's take a look at your own bill for health insurance compared to last year, shall we? Done. Oh, you meant at a national level? I see, is "cost-saving" code for "rationing" and "reducing service"?

“Rational argument with retarded children is futile.”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Thank you, that is essentially what I have been repeating to myself lately. If they were capable of reason they would not believe the garbage they believe and many of these retarded children are sporting gray hair and or beards.
The world has changed so much it is hard to realize, when I was fourteen I was expected to come home from school and go to work on the farm without needing to be supervised. By the time I turned 23 my family was giving up on me because I didn’t have a wife and children already even though I had had an honorable discharge from the Navy since I turned 21! By the time I finally married at 28 I had a solid reputation as a good for nothing despite the fact that I was always employed and at better jobs than most of them had, some of them probably had heart attacks on hearing that I actually had finally gotten married. Now I see thirty five year olds acting like schoolkids and expecting their parents to support them.

I’ve found that including a pipe tomahawk with the regular carving tools tends to have a marked calming effect on any screech howls present. A real peace pipe effect.

;>)

Have a good one.
