US Navy to Briefly Reduce Carriers in Persian Gulf

The U.S. aircraft carrier presence in the Persian Gulf will temporarily decline due to unexpected repairs and unusual maintenance problems, the Navy said on Wednesday.

The USS Nimitz was expected to be deployed to the Gulf early next year to relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which is now stationed in the region, but will be delayed due to the need for extensive repairs on a failed propulsion pump.

The USS Eisenhower is being sent back to the U.S for repairs to its flight deck. It will remain in Norfolk, Virginia, for two months and then return to the Middle East early next year to complete its deployment.

The Navy plans to send the USS Harry S Truman to the region early next year to restore the two-carrier presence. The USS John C. Stennis is already in the area.

Okay; dumb question: does that mean the entire Eisenhower Carrier Group goes back? Or does it temporarily re-attach to Stennis? (Obviously, I have no US Military background.)

This just shows why we need to cut the defense budget and get rid of those expensive aircraft carriers and all their escort vessels. Remember we don’t need bayonets or horses any more either. (sarcasm off)

The USS Nimitz will be delayed due to the need for extensive repairs on a failed propulsion pump.

Remember the Yorktown:When she pulled into Pearl Harbor on June 1, 1942*, she was badly damaged; from a direct bomb-hit which had struck the flight deck, pierced it, and finally exploded in the bowels of the ship, six decks down; from a second bomb which caromed off her flight gallery forward on the starboard side and exploded upon hitting the water, peppering the shell above the water-line with shrapnel holes; and from a third near miss which exploded in the water close enough to the side to open the seams, and corrugate the bottom on the port side, amidships.

She went back out on June 2nd. repaired and ready to fight.
1400 men worked on her all day and all night.

The Nimitz has a bad propulsion pump, don’t know when she can leave port.

Carte Blanche being offered to the ragheads. An obvious opening for an attack on Israel. Rather than order OUR assets to stand down when Israel is attacked....too soon after Benghazi....he’ll just make sure there AREN’T ANY assets there to complicate his sell-out of Israel./Sarc!

Today’s shipyards are a union cesspool. Ships come out in worse shape than when they went in. Ask me how I know? 21 year Navy Vet.

Interesting article. I qualified as an operator on numerous naval nuclear power plants (D1G, S5W and S6G) and as an Engineering Officer of the Watch on a conventional 1200 PSI plant and you know what? I’ve never once heard of a “propulsion pump.” Not only that, as far as I recall there’s no pump that cannot be isolated and operated around.

That’s probably a pump associated with the reactors. Even in an on shore power plant, some work on those is unusual and lengthy.

I'm clueless about navy ships but that was my first thought. Just another of the usurper's happy coinky dinks.

Searching on google leads me to believe it is a reactor water pump.

Is that something that could be worked around? I have no idea, I’m a weather man.
