Posted on 11/22/2012 5:56:24 PM PST by lowbridge
Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.) on Wednesday said that addressing the nations looming fiscal cliff took precedence over honoring the anti-tax pledge he signed for conservative activist Grover Norquist.
I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge, said Chambliss to local Georgia television station 13WMAZ. If we do it his way then well continue in debt, and I just have a disagreement with him about that.
Chambliss said he expected that Norquist and some conservatives might hold his decision against him when he is up for reelection in 2014, but said he was confident he had made the right choice.

A republican for tax increases, sadly not a news story anymore. It is time for the republican party to wither and die.
And his belief that any taxes raised will actually be put to reducing the deficit/debt is backed up by ... ???
It'll be taxes raised and monopoly money spent so that they can raise taxes again in a few years.
I have zero belief in the federal system and their willingness to reduce either the deficit and the debt.
Throw out every one of these faux conservatives the first chance you get. The current GOP and it’s leadership need to land on the ash heap.
“Conservative activist’? Grover Norquist: Married to a muslim. Founder of the islamic institute. Agenda setter, lobbyist, policy maker and overall heavy hitter for the muslim/islamic terrorist front group, C.A.I.R. Based right here in the good old USA, this 1930’s nazi style ‘Bund’ outfit is an insidious disease and Norquist is a huge player involved up to the hilt in it. He talks, they listen.
Yeah Saxby, I’ll remember it..nice of you to remind me.
Time for all the old goats to go!
How about going back to 2008 level spending?
Stop the SPENDING, you dumbass....the Deficit is the result of Reckless Spending, and until it is rolled back, there will be MORE Spending with ANY increase in Revenues....COUNT ON IT.
Not surprised at all...

Even here in MA we balance the budget. In DC, it is Monopoly money.
Right on target. Norquist is a problem not a solution.
Norquist is also a big time amnesty supporter.

I’d ditch the pro-Islamist, illegal amnesty loving SOB too. Norquist is poison.
I think most would have turned their back on their promises and on us even if Romney had won. I believe the difference is only in how screwed we are.
Another *conservative* who doesn’t get the more you give the government the more it will spend and the more it will spend the more debt we will have.
Everyone should ditch the terror-supporting Norquist.
I despise Norquist as well, but what do you mean by the “Bund” comment. I would like to know more about this.
It is going to tax cuts in spending and then a tax increase (in that order) to fix the problem. Interest payments on the national debt will one day exceed all government revenues. That is the cliff.
Listen to Mark Levin if you can. He has been exposing the perfidity of John Boehner who certainly appears to be a collaborator with the Democrats. Sometimes I wonder if the Democrats are fielding fake Republicans into Repulbican campaigns. Nothing would surprise me today, nothing!
“We should just turn the sheriff loose and have him arrest every Muslim that crosses the state line.” - U.S. Rep. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) [Valdosta Daily Times, 11/20/01
I've read somewhere that he's also inexplicably pro-"gay," even though islamic sympathies should rule that out.
I’m sorry to sound so down today. Seeing the fruits of yielding the education system in this country to the Dims is really bothering me today. Indoctrination, lack of a controlling legal authority in Life (morals), and peer pressure are killing us.
I believe it is in the withering stage now, and death will follow soon.
I will not miss it.
Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.) cares more about his own ass than America. His political future trumps private growth, debt reduction, and the future. Guess the people of Georgia have a decision to make.
The Republicans are mildly evil.
This country is following the exact foot steps of other countries which gradually morphed into socialism. The analogy is slowly boiling a frog in water. He has no idea he will soon be mortal danger.
Expect more spending, not less. People have figured out they like the free stuff and will keep electing those who promise the most.
Good news is most countries make a turn towards capitalism after suffering through ravages of socialism. So will this country. Bad news is it takes 30 to 40 years before the masses had enough and wake up.
So, do not get upset, you can’t change this big momentum towards socialism. Enjoy life the best you can. As your material standard of living gradually decreases, the more intelligent ones will not let that stop them from enjoying the simpler things in life...your family, sunsets, smell of roses, lighting wood in fireplace on a cold night, listening to great music, playing card games.....all cost so little.
After supporting Romney, Freepers can’t complain about RINOs. The conservatives just showed the GOP that we’ll support RINOs, even if they’re losers.
Saxby Chambliss actually think’s HE is relevant!
Rebranding is not a solution, it would lead to a vote split and huge democrat majorities and then when the GOP folds the new party would have the same old people in it. Look at what happened in Canada.
Winning primaries is the only solution.
Suxby is begging to be Lugared.
This type of poker game with Dems is very tricky.
If a few crazy House Rs start saying ‘Shut it down, shut it down, Default, Default’ like last years standoff then Rs will lose this for sure, again.’
The only way to win is to convince voters that Obama and Dems pushed us over the cliff. If O thinks HE will get the blame for the consequences then he will cave. That should be Republicans #1 goal, TO WIN.
The Republican circular firing squad is getting really boring to me. How about winning some?
Republicans are like women, can’t get along with each other. AHAHAHAHAHA.
I made this same point tonight to a fellow Republican after dinner.
We used to see Dems as the fractured special interest multiple groups who could not be united to beat Rs, but now it looks like Rs are the dysfunctional party.
I saw a post last night claiming that Scott Brown lost to Elizabeth Warren because he wasn't conservative enough. It was a small part of the post so I didn't jump in.
This is totally delusional. A state (MA) that elects Elizabeth Warren is not going to at any time elect a Jim DeMint.
Considering his state voters Scott Brown made many courageous votes and lost his seat for it.
“Yeah Saxby, Ill remember it..nice of you to remind me.
Time for all the old goats to go!”
Like most RINO’s, Saxby looked down after the election and noticed that little willie was missing, hence his capitulation. They might as well close up all the men’s rooms in the Capitol frequented by the Repubicans to avoid “gender problems.”
Chambliss is a draft-dodging SOB of the first degree. He’s also a RINO that I have never had any use for. He might as well switch parties. The chickenhawk SOB.
We are going to primary that RINO in 2014.
It's not about "THE PLEDGE"...
...or some old "paper" you signed....
.....It's about "THE PRINCIPLES"
You need to do some serious "listening" to your constituents....
And fight tooth and nail to keep new taxes out of the mix....
...Until BHO and the socialist cabal makes some level of commitment to reign in fraud, corruption, waste....
And just dumb@$$ gub'mint spending....
Don't make me come up there...
I will run against you my own bad self...
Well, Canada had two right-of-center parties (the contradictory named "Progressive Conservatives" and the "Reform Party of Canada"), which were competitive in different regions of the country. They merged them and created an entirely new national "Conservative Party" that was capable of giving them a majority. It worked.
Frankly, I surprised conservatives don't win every election in Canada and England, since the conservatives have a single major party but the left-wing vote is split among multiple major parties there (UK: Liberal Democrats & Labour, Canada: Liberals, New Democratic Party, Bloc Quebecois). It should be like Ireland in reverse (where the right-of-center Fine Gael & Fianna Fáil beat each other up instead of going after the socialist Labour Party)
The two party system really causes problems in the U.S., since both the GOP and RATs have to cover a huge range of the political spectrum to get a majority. The RATs seem to be much better at uniting all their factions than us, and they did well in 2012 even though the Blue Dog RATs have dwindled to almost nothing.

The vote split with the Reform party led to three easy Liberal majority wins including their initial landslide in 1993 were the PCs the party that won the last election was reduced to TWO seats. In 1997 the PC plus reform vote equaled the Liberal vote, but the liberals won a majority with twice as many seats as PC and Reform combined. It took the parties a decade to merge, a decade of holding almost no seats in Ontario.
We could not survive a decade with a heavily democrat congress.
And it took them till the 4th election with the new merged party to win a majority.
Look what the 1912 split wrought here. The Bull Moose morons ran candidates for Congress and state leg too, must have been a big part of the reason the rats won huge majorities that gave Wilson carte blance.
It is quite disgusting that the Tories didn’t win the last UK election outright. In the past the Liberal Democrats and the predecessor party took evenly from both parties. In modern times they take mostly from Labour but still the Tories won only a minority after the long windup to the election evaporated their poll lead.
The Lib Dem vote has eroded in the polls, moved straight to Labour who would win easily if they had an election today.
Ireland is the most disgusting of all, 2 center-right (both of them so squishy they make the UK Conservative party look like gold) parties that disagree on little being bitter enemies because they were on opposite sides during Irish independence. They form coalitions with the Greens or Labour rather than work together. Kinda reminds one of the conservative southern democrats who were still too butthurt over the civil war to wake up while they’re national party was going hardcore socialist.
Thing about Quebec lately they have been more divided federally over separatism than ideology. The Liberals there have been killed by scandal.
The New Democrats, the new flavor previously with no success in Quebec won most of the “federalist” vote outside of a few strongholds of the Liberals and Conservatives.
Harper tried to make his party the federalist option in Quebec in 2008. After initial success he opposed some stupid arts funding that caused his numbers to crash. In the last election he ignored them, was reduced to a few seats there and won a majority by dominating in Ontario.
