Sometime early on Black Friday, the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, went down and stopped all gun sales, Bangor-area gun dealers said.

High call volumes caused “intermittent outages” in the system, an FBI spokesman confirmed Friday afternoon.

Well that’s odd. That also happened to the folks counting republican votes on election day...

pick up and handle as many guns as you can, when one feels right in your hand, you'll know it...

as far as auto's go, make real sure you can pull the slide back to load it/cycle a misfeed

You won’t lack for advice in here, but IMHO get a 20-guage shotgun and stoke it up with #4 goose shot. Won’t penetrate walls and punch holes in things & people in the adjoining apartment or down the street as much as a pistol bullet is apt to, but at close range where you need it, utterly devastating.

Psychological deterrent significant with a scatter gun.
Not many gremlins are crazy or stupid enough to stick around once they look down the barrel of your fowling piece.

A double barrel = intimidation X2, and unless you are going to train / practice intensively the simpler your action the better - and usually safer.

If you can’t settle a hostile home invasion issue with one or two rounds of #4 to center mass at 10 ft. (don’t let ‘em get any closer than that!) then call in an air strike; the war has arrived.

Don’t be hesitant or squeamish; mental prep critical.
A scumbag on bath salts is about as close to a zombie as you’ll ever hope to encounter; they have almost superhuman psychotic strength and it takes a #@!! of a lot to stop them.

A pistol - even a magnum - is a wimp compared to even a light gauge shotgun. The little .410 is more powerful than Dirty Harry’s fabled .44 Magnum, and it’s amazingly easy to miss even at close range with a sidearm, especially under stress. Look at how many cops shoot up a whole neighborhood before they manage to tag the bad guy - and they are trained!

Unless you are really emaciated or have crippling arthritis, you should be able to handle a 20 bore all right - but you MUST get competent training in defensive strategy, tactics, and the law - not just shooting.

Check with your local PD, Sheriff’s office, or shooting club for certified courses and instructors in your area.

Looking for something lighter and easier to handle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Others will sound off but my suggestion is a Smith & Wesson 640 or 642, both are 5 shot revolvers that will shoot .38 Special ammo. No switches or push-pull-click-clack, simply pull the trigger. Gun is about 7 inches long and weighs a little over a pound. Stainless steel. Sweet.

Thanks for the replies so far, gives me a lot to think about. Don’t have any neighbors to worry about as far as other structures and I am not feeble. Hate to but a second shotgun we have a 16 gauge now. I was thinking a handgun would be a little quicker access. I am a decent shot and when it comes to our home I don’t think I would hesitate. I am half serb. Have shot many a 4 legged varmint over the years.

Last Tuesday the Missouri Rifle Deer Season for bucks and antlerless deer ended. On December 2nd the rifle season for anterless deer ends. For all intents and proposes the center fire rifle seasons will end on that date.

Mark your calendar for December 3rd. After that date is a good time for additional investing in "the market". Dumping investments will increase as the need for Christmas cash hits the marketplace.

I'm not sure where you live, but in Indiana, CCW or no, you still have to do the damned NIC to buy a gun. I don't know if that's a law or if it's just the a-hole dealers around here... but every time I show resistance, I get the "no check, no firearm" response from the dealer. The CCW used to waive the waiting period for handguns, but we don't even have that anymore, pass the NIC and you walk away with it.

For private sales/purchases, I always just copy down drivers lic. info and ask if they are a felon... just to cover my backside in case I'm ever forced into some sort of questioning by authorities.

This isn’t the first time that fire arm checks were shut down and it wasn’t because of call volume. They shut down the fire arm checks when cut backs forced some public employees to reduce staff or take unpaid time off. They chose to hold up the fire arms checks as a cost cutting measure.

I know because my husband tried to make a purchase that week. Instead of an overnight or immediate approval, it took a whole week. The excuse was the cut backs.

Hubby fired a CZ (heavy)...

Since you are looking for home protection and not a carry weapon, you might give the CZ another look. They are extremely reliable, and the added weight of the all-metal frame helps minimize recoil. If your adrenaline is flowing, you probably wouldn't even notice the weight.

Whichever way you go, get plenty of range time, and congrats on expanding your horizons.

When WA State held up the background check for my husband on the grounds of being short handed, my husband already had a concealed carry license.

If you want home protection, here are some tips:

-get an alarm system, and make sure you post the signs in the windows all around the house (assuming you live in a single-family dwelling)

- install double-keyed dead bolts on your exterior doors. If you have a sliding glass door, buy a stop or put a 2X4 in the rail

-get a short-barrelled shotgun and learn how to use it

Here’s a site that looks at all sorts of ammunition. This page talks about the lack of penetration into a human with birdshot. And while #4 birdshot may not reliably kill a guy, I imagine it would deter MOST. However, after looking at his site (he has other pages with the testing results), I took out the #4 birdshot and put in 00 buckshot and slugs in my shotguns.

In Georgia, the former GFL and now the CWCP serve as the NICS check. Except for one or two years a whole back. BATF claimed Georgia didn’t do regular checks on license holders in the 5 year period

Others have given good advice. Go to a range that rents or borrow and try different handguns and try them. Absolutely nothing wrong with a 16 .

How about we stop the infringement that "shall not" happen and get rid of the damned NICS.

Government incompetence is infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.
