Saudi husbands 'alerted by text' if their wives leave the country

Saudi women's rights activist Manal al-Sherif, who last year urged women to defy a driving ban, said a man had contacted her to say he had received a text from the immigration authorities while at the airport with his wife.

"The authorities are using technology to monitor women," said Saudi author and journalist Badriya al-Bishr, who criticised the "state of slavery under which women are held" in the kingdom.

"This is technology used to serve backwardness in order to keep women imprisoned," she added.

Under laws influenced by the strict Wahabi interpretation of Islam, women are not allowed to leave Saudi Arabia without permission from their male guardian (a husband, father or brother), who must give consent by signing what is known as the "yellow sheet" at the airport or border.

They don’t care about other people.
They aren’t smart enough to realize one day this crap will be over their heads.

This is nothing compared to the technology they are using right here in the U.S. to track it’s own citizens instead of the real criminals.

The ball and chain is the norm in Saudi. You should see the way they treat foreign nationals from the non-Western countries. They call them TCNs.(Third Country Nationals)

When the women from these countries return to Saudi they have to stay in the airport until their sponsor picks them up. They are deported after three days.

The irony is most Saudi men (those not in the ruling family or the unskilled laborers brought over) would prefer a less strict interpretation of Islam. The driving ban, for example, has exerted a great deal of hardship upon middle-class Saudis who must arrange transportation for their wives to go perform typical wifely duties such as shopping and other errands.

They could do something about this if they were so inclined. It's not really my problem.

>They would claim that the Saudis are Republicans.

No, first they would declare the saudis are Conservatives.

Then they would beat the gopE primary winner over the head with it.

And the principled will sit back and watch it happen.

This really would be an intolerable deprivation of liberty, equality, and basic human dignity if they didn’t have all that oil.

The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Winston Churchill 1899
