Sen. Rand Paul renews fight over indefinite detention of US citizens

The Hill
Nov. 25, 2012

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is bringing a new — and more aggressive — approach to a longstanding debate over the Defense authorization bill, threatening to filibuster the bill to get a vote on his amendment limiting indefinite detention.

Paul’s amendment takes a new tack to curb the military’s ability to indefinitely detain U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism by affirming they have the right to a speedy trial by jury under the Sixth Amendment.

His push to change the indefinite detention laws for U.S. citizens follows a contentious fight last year where liberal Senate Democrats waged an unsuccessful attempt to scale back the detention laws before an 11th-hour, watered-down compromise was ultimately reached.

Paul’s filibuster threat could throw into flux what’s already been a long-winding road to the floor for the Defense authorization bill, which Armed Services Committee leaders have been clamoring to get on the floor since it passed out of committee in May.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said last week that he would move to the Defense bill after the Thanksgiving holiday, and would allow for an open amendment process with a limited number of amendments managed by Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and ranking member John McCain (R-Ariz.).

The day after Reid said the Senate would move to the defense bill, however, Paul put a hold on the legislation, a move Paul took because there was not an agreement to vote on his amendment, according to his office.

As 70% of Jews in america vote Israels’ enemies, why should we care much any more?

Conservatives sometimes go a little wobbly with strict constitutionalists and all that personal liberty if it means following only the Constitution, without the volumes and volumes of additional laws and decades of habits that have been produced since.

I have to think abou this. Regarding our friends Israel, we do fund all her enemies, I presume for reasons having to do with leverage to keep our hand in the game at the table.

“However, he is NOT a republican anymore than his father. He is a Libertarian and should stop calling himself a Republican.”

Each party is an internal coalition of a wide variety of views. Libertarians, on many issues, find their home in the R party. So do social conservatives, so do fiscal conservatives, so do country club republicans, so do RINOs.

Far as I’m concerned, he has as much right to run there as any of the above. Voters make choices.

I’ve yet to see an R candidate that holds every view I do. Most go lame somewhere along the road.

Compared to Mitt, I’d prefer Rand, assuming he answers some tough questions about Israel satisfactorily.

For the record, I’m not a Republican. I’m a conservative who generally thinks the federal gov’t should do less here and abroad and stay the heck out of our lives in most ways. Maybe even obey the Constitution.

In case no one has noticed, our country can’t even pay interest on the debt + entitlements without borrowing. That doesn’t even begin to include defense, the electric bill at the White House, or anything else.

” And despite his posturing, one must wonder what he really thinks of Israel given his father’s horrific views”

Sins of the father ?????? You must be kidding.

“He is a Libertarian and should stop calling himself a Republican.”

I am about to do the same thing. The Republican Party is a sham! Decent Conservatives and Libertarians should abandon the GOP en masse. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to change my registration to Independent from Republican. Just as has happened with the RAT Party and the Marxists, so too has the GOP become a worthless collection of dickless old White men who haven’t the guts to man up and defend our Constitution. The GOP should re-name itself, the”It’s My Turn Party” for old has been politicians like Dole and McLame, and “moderates” like Romney who don’t stand for the principles for which the GOP used to stand.

BREAKING NEWS........

RAND Paul is not RON Paul. “The Pauls” What does that mean? Is that a new music group? A new Hair band?

I assume Rand Paul loves his father and shows him respect, as he should. That does not mean he shares all his views.

STOP the connecting of Rand with Ron, they are two distinct individuals. Rand probably has views more in common with Allen West than he does his own father.

Stop jumping to conclusions and start listening to what he actually says. He is much like Newt in this regard. You can't go by sound bites, you have to listen to his explanations of his ideas.

Trying to make him his father is counter productive and frankly, ignorant.

Rand Paul has issues he is right on occasionally. Just as a broken clock in right twice every day.

However, he is NOT a republican anymore than his father.

You are wrong. He is correct very often. He is much more a Republican than his father.

Hopefully, he doesn’t have all the same answers as his father, but at the same time, he had better have an answer better than Obama’s on Israel, to simply call Hamas the terrorist scum that they are.

You might find the answers to your questions in the list of links the poster included.

If we get to 2016 before CWII breaks out or a full economic collapse we have got to fight off the GOP establishment who will try to jam Rubio or Jeb Bush down our throats. We need to try to get Rand Paul nominated. He is the best hope at the ballot box.

Bet he (like WAY too many here) supported the Patriot Act back in the day. The Patriot Act, more than anything, has turned us into a Totalitarian State. We should have been screaming against that from the beginning. But, no ... too many had to wave the flag.

Utter idiocy. Glad he’s doing it but ... I hold out no hope on this one. if anything will be seen as killing America it will be the Patriot Act.

I agree with you. Even Mark Levin said he holds some Libertarian views, such as smaller government, etc. The purists are out in force already to destroy anyone who might have a chance in 2016. I’m beginning to think some of them would find fault even if Jesus was on the ballot. He hangs out with adulterers, tax collectors, etc. I can hear them now. No wonder we lose elections.

Republicans just want "less government", never knowing how to define it or reduce it (with a slight exception for Newt Gingrich and his "Contract with America"). They just want smaller chains on their ankles.

Impeach the kenyan or secession.
