::Sigh:: What was that definition of "insanity" again?
The Israeli government is absolutely monomaniacal about winning a conventional PR war that will convince everyone else that it is just another country.
The trouble with this is that Israel is not just another country and the Jewish People are not just another people. Non-Jews instinctively grasp what the Israeli government and secular Israelis refuse to consider: that there is a gulf between Jews and the rest of humanity put there by G-d Himself (the very essence of holiness is "separateness").
Why do the other nations hate Israel so much? Because they know this. A sovereign Jewish state in the Holy Land isn't just a Hebrew-speaking Portugal (as Rabbi Kahana' zt"l Hy"d put it). The Nations realize that unlike any other state in existence, a Jewish State undermines their "gxds," their mythologies, their whole worldview(s). They will never make peace with Israel or Jews so long as they retain those flawed worldviews.
One of the great ironies of history is that the exile of G-d from the sphere of objective reality to that of subjective ethno-cultural folklore was largely accomplished as a corrective to chrstian persecution of the Jews. Yet what has escaped everyone is that if HaShem exists, He does so objectively. To pretend that belief in HaShem is a subjective ethno-cultural concept separate from everyday reality is to engage in fantasy. G-d exists. He must be acknowledged. And the only way for Israel and the Jewish People to justify their existence is to bring G-d in from the private chapel to which He has been exiled and start treating Him as if He were as true and certain as the laws of mathematics. Any other "justification" for the Jewish mission and the existence of a Jewish State in the Holy Land will fail miserably. It cannot win.
Unfortunately, hard-wired into the mind of the world is the idea that the objective reality of G-d is a chrstian concept (specifically, a concept of extremely reactionary chrstians) and any attempt to treat Him as objectively real entails some sort of legislating of chrstianity.
How insane we have become. I'm certainly glad that Yeshoshu`a Bin Nun didn't have the ghost of medieval chrstianity to dissuade him from doing what had to be done over three thousand years ago.
