Skip to comments.Sen. Dick Durbin: Medicare, Medicaid Fair Game in Talks to Avoid Fiscal Cliff
Posted on 11/25/2012 1:06:41 PM PST by tobyhill
Sen. Dick Durbin said today that his Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate should be willing to address entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid in deficit reduction negotiations.
From my side of the table, bring entitlement reform into the conversation, Durbin said on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Social Security set aside doesnt add to the deficit. But when it comes to Medicare and Medicaid, protect the integrity of the program, but give it solvency for more and more years.
But Durbin ruled out raising the age of Medicare eligibility as a potential reform.
Weve got to make sure that there is seamless coverage of affordable health insurance for every American, Durbin said. My concern about raising that Medicare retirement age is there will be gaps in coverage or coverage thats way too expensive for seniors to purchase.

LIAR IS RIGHT!
Sounds like a reasonable statement right? Wrong! Reason why SS set aside doesn't add to the deficit is because they've already borrowed the money
Throw in Commiecare and we have a deal.
Be careful with Medicare Advantage dick........ your life depends on it
Don’t be surprised if those programs and Obamacare will be axed in favor of a single pay national health care system.
As part of a “grand bargain”
OKAY... from what is posted in the OP it doesn’t sound like they are willing to cut anything
DREAM act Durbin. Liar.
More than anything else, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”, or “Obamacare”, should be on the table.
Inasmuch as much of the funding for this monstrosity was simply EXPROPRIATED from Medicare and Medicaid, if “Obamacare” is properly eviserated, most of those funds should be back where they properly belong. THEN, we can talk about how to redirect the funds that are available to Medicare and Medicaid.
The fact is, the same dollar cannot be spent twice, which is the little piece of legerdemain that was played on the public and the unsuspecting members of Congress, who never read the bill. The arithmetic does not add up or reconcile in normal bookkeeping practice.
If the dollars are to be used to fund Medicare, then by definition, they are not available to be spent on the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”. The dollars are one place or the other, they cannot occupy two accounts payable simultaneously.
So which one are you going to give up, Dick Durbin? Or didn’t you read the bill before you voted on it either?
Eliminate medicaid, those leaches don’t contribute anything!!!
Gifts and Free Stuff for everybody can get pretty expensive.
NOTE TO THOSE OVER AGE 65: Get sick and it costs, then you can expect a pain pill and expect to die. Thank you, your federal government.
Places to fix the budget.
Social Security? Yes (in short order... my take)
Yep, lets F those who have played by the rules and reward those who haven’t.
But not TANF, SSI, EITC, SNAP, etc, because those are for Eric Holder’s people.
Dick Turban and his asswipe party ALREADY HAVE DESTROYED those programs via Obamacare. They replaced them with a worse program.
Here comes Alensky. Choose your opponents of doing exactly what you are doing-—we Paid for soc and medicare leave them the hell alone. Geo W had a good plan to save it but the slimey DEMs said he was trying to take away the seniors social sec. If anyone in the GOP votes for this they should be tarred and feathered!!!
Sen. Durbin can run for re-election, in 2014. I live near Chicago, and I know a conservative who will run in that race. He’s Chad Koppie, a member of the Kane Co. Regional Board of Schools. In the 1998 IL governor primary, Chad was the only conservative candidate. He’s pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, pro-life, pro-gun rights, and anti-illegal alien. His blog is chadkoppiescampaign.blogspot.com. If you know any consevatives, who live in Illinois, please tell them about Chad and ask them to volunteer and/or donate to his campaign.
If Pubs want to play it like the Dems, Durbin should be immediately condemned as “throwing the old and sick under the bus”.
Then let the fiscal cliff happen and blame it on him personally.
Self-ping. Thanks tobyhill.
His buddy Sen Limpy Grahamnesty was on with him and he said that senate Republicans demand that the automatic spending cuts be repealed (so no cuts) and instead he wants to raise the (future) age of eligibility for Medicare to ‘pay for it’, which is hardly cutting spending.
Plus when Durbin challenged him and said the medicare trust fund (worthless IOUs Limpy) is good for another decade Grahamnesty didn't have the guts to say a word.
This is so typical, tax cuts now, spending and borrowing now and cut our entitlements later. Then he can claim that he (they) cut the deficit and no-one had to pay for it.
Of course its fair game ..why not ..they have screwed everyone else..they will do anything for more cash..the one thing they wont do is STOP SPENDING
“Dont be surprised if those programs and Obamacare will be axed in favor of a single pay national health care system.”
This has always been the goal!!
