I assumed not many people would be bugging in, but I am as well. My home is close to a reservoir and unfortunately, I don’t have the resources for a bug-out location. I feel like leaving one’s home is one of the worst things to do in time of crisis unless in immediate danger.

I read on one blog about the idea of NOT packing cans, rations, etc,,just pack stuff for survival ‘bread’,,can be eaten raw,,or cooked on any heated surface,,looks like a tortilla of sort,,just has basic calories,,can use it to wrap up other foods. Flour, water and baking soda. A very basic way to get a few calories,,and light to carry (versus cans).

Datrex bars are great. High calorie count, Long shelf life and immune to heat.

There will be hardships, but we’ll be better off than most.

When we were kids we called it camping.

I’m already out, full time out and up in the boonies/mountains but I do still carry a 48 hr. Emergency kit/bag/weapons/ammo in my rig though. Ya never know when ya might get stranded on some cold snowy dark night coming back up here after being down in the ‘big’ town.

If you’re going to have a bug-out bag, you better have a bug-out location as well as a good bug-out vehicle and travel route.

I have heard of folks renting houses in remote areas as a way of having an alternative location w/o the expense of buying a house.

Right now, I’m going to bug in. I live in a rural/suburban area where people have lots of 5-40 acres. And thanks to the 0-economy, there isn’t any new development. The major drawback, I suppose, is that the drones and zombies can still get here without too much gas. I’ll need to rely on guns and booby traps.

Nope, I was able to pack all of that into a small soft suitcase with wheels no less. The small items I first packed in a compartmentalized plastic case.

The larger stuff is in my bug out trunk toolkit and gear, things like bolt cutters, claw hammer & crowbar, wrenches & pliers, fire extinguishers & more baking soda, waterproof tarp & blanket & rope, yellow hazard tape, tow strap, jumper cables, kitty litter, emergency flares, tire foam, and one of my most used items, a folding chair. Still plenty of room.

So I figure toss my BOB in the trunk, and based upon how many other passengers, fill every spare inch of the interior with packaged food and water. I like food and water.

I think there are (at least) two separate scenarios here. A SHTF type disaster (man-made or natural) where staying put in your home is the best option. Then yes, food, water, medical supplies, heat & light, weapons and ammunition to protect you and yours from the idiot have-nots that think they're entitled to yours...

The true BOB is for when you have to leave on extremely short notice. Others have posted pretty good lists, I'd include a compass and a paper map of the local area, money, mess kit, and a tarp/shelter, water containers, folding shovel, machete/axe... Yes, it must be limited to about 50 lbs. You can go a little heavy, and discard what may not be appropriate for the situation. The BOB is for when you have to go and should be viewed as the first part of your E&E plan. Like when Holder's peeps show up...

I’m hoping to try to purchase my bug-out location (and then begin an immediate move-in) this week. Fortunately my work is portable, and the big city just has less-and-less to offer.

As for your brother’s farm, map out an alternative route, just in case. County roads, off the beaten path, avoid the interstate, etc.

Riiiiight. Yeah. That oughtta work out real well for ya. I'm sure the locals along those routes will believe ya when ya tell 'em yer "...just passin' through."......ROFLMAO

Ramen noodles. Zip lock bag and water. Even with no fire to boil water, place ramen noodles, spice pack in zip lock with water and let sit for a spell. Shake and serve. Light and great for caloric intake when not able to cook.

Same here. Don’t really have a place to bug out to, and there’s no way I’m taking my chances in a government-run emergency ‘shelter’.

The main artery for travel through the part of KY we live in is only US-75 - it’ll get clogged and jammed up in record time if something bad happens. Even the back roads and back-back roads will soon follow I’d imagine.

I sincerely believe we’re better off staying put as long as we can, and we’re preparing accordingly.

While TP is good, it is better to use the Asian method of pre-washing. An enema bag with warm water works fine, and removes the vast majority of waste, so you only use a little TP, or a washcloth, to dry off with.

Two friends of mine each tried that, and both times the local meth-heads broke in and squatted while it was unoccupied. Tore it all to hell.

One forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings.

I'm planning on having a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Major Kong approved.

I'm semi-rural and have several good neighbors, so I'll bug in unless it's something like a tornado. Then, it'll be hell trying to convince the Mrs to leave the companion animals and farm animals.
I'd really like to build a root cellar for a situation like that, but the rocky ground won't permit it.

I'm rural. I've got what I need. I'm stayin’ put. Neighbors and I know how to control the access to our hollow.

That comment should have been taken as more thought provoking than snarky.....

Do you really believe that you will be allowed free access to those back roads etc. by the locals? Don't expect it in my neck of the woods....ain't gonna happen.

When the SHTF, I hope it is ONLY your sensitivities that are hurt. Depending on the ability to move freely is a loser.

We’re rural. Our neighbors are farmers. We know them well enough. We’re on the same page. We’ll be bugging in. I’d hate to live in a city, even suburbs, getting out will be a pita. We have a plan for our kids to head here. We can squeeze in 14 if need be. Our kids are all prepping.

We have an old fashion cellar for tornadoes. In a pinch, we could retro fit it for nuclear fallout. Have you seen the series “Jericho”? It’s pretty good. It’s on netflix.
