WASHINGTON (AP) — For nearly six years, a senior Secret Service agent kept his extramarital affair with a Mexican woman a secret from the agency responsible for protecting the president.
But in the wake of an embarrassing prostitution scandal involving 13 agents and officers, Rafael Prieto’s secret was revealed by a fellow employee amid concerns the Secret Service wasn’t enforcing its rules consistently. With an internal investigation ongoing, Prieto apparently committed suicide last week, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
Prieto, a married father assigned to the security detail for President Barack Obama, admitted the years-long relationship with a woman from Mexico to U.S. investigators when confronted. Before his death, he was the subject of an investigation focused on whether he violated agency rules that require disclosing relationships with foreigners, those familiar with the matter said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Prieto’s death or the investigation.

Somebody is bucking for the Order of the Blue Falcon here. The initial scandal was reported by an agent and then somebody that was targeted in that investigation dimed this guy out.
Being unfaithful to your spouse is a bad thing, and a guy having an affair with a foreigner is a bad thing in the Secret Service, since it implies the guy is lying on his 5 year background investigation. It is still an order of magnitude different than engaging prostitutes while on the lead team for the President's security detail.

Ayup. Even though cheating on spouses is common today, there is still enough of jealousy left in the world that it could open a body up to blackmail. Now if the affair were copacetic with the spouse, the Secret Service would yawn.
It is a bad thing, and lying in your 5 year review is terminal to a career in the SS.
The suicide is certainly a bridge too far for remorse over an exposed affair. There were very likely other problems that may never be known, the least of which could be common alcoholism, but something drove him to despair.

I don’t think the spouse is the only one that people often want to hide an affair from.
