The Undying Myth - Democrats are more charitable than Republicans
http://www.dfwcatholic.org ^ | November 23, 2012 | Thomas Addis

One of the many exit polls following President Obama’s re-election asked Obama supporters why they rejected Mitt Romney. There were several reasons given, but two of them I found particularly revealing. A large percentage felt that Romney was only concerned about helping wealthy people. The second reason, and one directly connected to the first, was that Romney did not care about middle-class or poor people. So the Democrat plan to paint Romney and, by extension, all Republicans/conservatives as insensitive elitists was apparently quite successful. The problem is that this characterization is a myth. Any serious comparison between liberals and conservatives will find that conservatives are far more charitable.

In 2006, libertarian commentator John Stossel wrote, “But the idea that liberals give more is a myth. Of the top 25 states where people give an above average percentage, all but one (Maryland) were red–conservative–states in the last [2004] presidential election.” Professor Arthur Brooks of Syracuse University, author of the 2007 book Who Really Cares, wrote,“When you look at the data, it turns out that conservatives give about 30 percent more. And incidentally, conservative-headed families make slightly less money.” Brooks added, “The people who give one thing tend to be the people who give everything in America. You find that people who believe it’s the government’s job to make incomes more equal, are far less likely to give their money away.” Referring to a different kind of giving covered by Brooks, Stossel noted, “Conservatives are even 18 percent more likely to give blood.”

This is a good article, but something that everyone with a brain already knew. Democrats are tightwad blowhards that hold on to their money. Joe Biden's "charitable" giving sums up the majority of all democrats. This creep gives nothing to anyone.

Until conservatives find a way to communicate to the general population the Democrat party and their mainstream media propaganda outlets will determine public perceptions.

What is the Republican message today? I hear crickets chirping just like I did yesterday.

As long as Conservative think the “two-party” system is R-D....rather than DC-Flyover Country.....they’ll be relegated to playing catch up all day long......

The dirty little secret is that the States are the opportunity for the Tea Party. That and paper trail receipt coded ballots.

Hopefully, a lot of this change. I used to give thousands to charity, but with the new tax changes, I have to ask a clerk to give me a receipt for money I gave to Easter Seals, MS, etc. that was on all the checkout stands. Used to put the $1.69 or whatever change I had coming in a ‘diary’ and used it when I got audited. No more. I keep my change. When asked ‘ Do you want to donate your change to Easter Seals (or any other health organization) I now say “Nope. Obamacare just took care of that.” Dollar Store has a charity for adults learning how to read. They ask me to donate my change and I tell them I already did with my school taxes. I used to take used clothing in to different charities but now even the Salvation Army wants only GOOD stuff, already cleaned and no buttons missing. I throw them in the garbage now. Churches have drop off places with no one around to give receipts. Meh! Used to give to giving trees for mentally retarded adults until I found (when working for a MR Center) the aides HAVE to use up the Social Security they receive (none of them have ever worked a day in their lives) so they don’t lose any of the benefits they get. The aides buy $400 sneakers and $60 cologne that unexpectedly comes up missing at Christmas. Nope, done giving so the Red Cross bosses can knock down the high six figure salaries.

Yes, it’s the crickets syndrome! We get this information and it’s relegated to the waste hopper. We Conservatives need to attack every lie and piece of miss-information, every time, not just in a presidential election year. Lord knows the MSM will never help with something as difficult as the truth

I don't have the statistics to prove it, but I've often heard that Conservatives are much more supportive in individual and private charity while leftists believe that all charity and assistance are properly the venue of the government collective and therefore don't feel any obligation for private and individual action. The left, therefore, feels charitable as they impose one coercive program after another.

The reason this perception exists to a such a high degree is that the liberal politicians relentlessly hammer it home with thousands and thousands of commercials during campaign season, and liberal media convey the message both overtly and subtly in dozens of ways.

It infuriates me.

99% of the Republican National Convention was not shown on network TV and certainly not shown on CNN and PMSNBC. And only a portion shown on Fox. The part none saw were all the couples that came on stage to talk about Romney and all that he has done for others. From donating money people he never layed eyes on to giving thousands of dollars to VA hospitals, to paying for operations for terminally ill children. None of this was shown on national TV. If you wanted to see it you had to watch the convention on C-Span. The slobbering love affair the media has with the Kenyan did as much to defeat Romney as rigged voting did.

“paper trail receipt coded ballots”

If the massive voter fraud in this country isn’t stopped in its tracks, our elections will be third world jokes from now on. Hugo Obama style jokes in my opinion.

Right now there is a big move to “follow the Jack Kemp” model, the problem with Kemp AND hundreds of office holders running or talking can be summed up in this exchange in the VP debates between Groe and Kemp. Gore said, “jack Kemp is one of the good republicans.” Kemp just looked at him and smiled, because he did not have teh knowledge of facts contained in this story - republicans and relougious people give via their chruches and one on one charities - tryin g not to depend on government. Republicans are crappy at telling this and Kemp is one example of the failure to “communicate conservative values.”

I agree- so true- and never a response from repubs!

1. Democrats so much nicer than pubs- no response
2. Demos so much smarter
3. demos care about people

ETC. etc.- the reponse is ALWAYS weak- and the Lame stream media- makes sure that the repub side is not put
out to the public- the pubs are lost Because they want to be
DEMOCRATS!-

I remember the Milton Friedman Money Spending conceptualization;

1. Spend your own money for yourself - Self explanatory,
2. Spend your money for sombody else - Individual Charity,
3. Spend somebody else’s money for yourself - Welfare Recipients,
4. Spend somebody else’s money for somebody else - Government,

Start with these and it is easy to see that spending caution, efficiency and oversight decrease as we go down the list. Yet ease of spending and interest in increased spending goes in the opposite direction.

The final factor, not specified but rather implied in the above equation, is personal responsibility. It is easy to give the larger organization (like government) the responsibility when you are not holding your own self to be responsible. Look at the charitable giving lines in the pre-campaign tax returns for Obama and Biden. Tells a story there, doesn't it? Same for the Clintons, remember them taking donation credit for underwear?
