Romney beat McCain by nearly 10 points in Michigan back in 08 but just barely squeaked out a tie over Santorum with a last minute primary day attack on Santorum for doing exactly what he him self was doing in reaching out to union members.
In the end, Rush was right. Romney won his primaries in places that weren't going to vote for him while ignoring the base.

Well, Team Romney's "etch-a-sketch" strategy all along was to either undermine or carpet bomb any potential rivals early on, garner just enough Conservative votes to get through the primaries, and then swing left to win the general election with party-first ABOs, mushy independents, and supposedly disaffected democRats.
They gambled that they did not need the Conservative base.
They gambled wrong.
