What % of the voter-aged (= registered and unregistered) pool voted in this election?
Been looking for that stat myself.
Here in Virginia it varied from about 50% in reliably red counties where Obama's war on coal should ave motivated a few more voters to 60% in the black and blue cities like Petersburg. In my own reddish rural county it was Romney 60-40 with 17k out of voting age 29k. Our lib/black precinct had much longer lines than elsewhere but I don't have numerical breakdowns for that yet.
2000 | 209,787 | 105,594 | 50.3%
2004 | 219,553 | 122,349 | 55.7%
2008 | 229,945 | 131,407 | 57.1%
Note: While final exact figures for 2012 are yet to be calculated, the Bipartisan Research Center has stated that turnout for 2012 was 57.5 percent of the eligible voters, which they claim was a decline from 2008. They estimate that as a percent of eligible voters, turn out was: 2000, 54.2%; in 2004 60.4%; 2008 62.3%; and 2012 57.5%. These were the same figures as given by the Center for the Study of the American Electorate.
