"When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) US Founding Father
btt
Yep.
Well whoever said was right on the money.
We owe it to Mr. Franklin, et al, to reexamine the right to vote without proof of means of support (that excludes unearned govt. funds).
David Robertson recorded and published the debates at the Virginia Ratification Convention of 1788. It was here the giants Patrick Henry, James Madison and their teams went toe to toe to decide the fate of the Union. Robertson had this to say in his book’s introduction in 1805:
“Every speech breathes the spirit of a freeman; and should the following record descend to an enslaved posterity, every page will become a monument of the political purity of their fathers, and of their own disgraceful degeneracy.”
As we slip into tyranny, we indeed have a record of how far we have fallen, our “own political degeneracy.”
Regardless of who said or didn’t say this quote.
I am sick and tired of “conservatives” attributing quotes to the Founders which they never said. Falsifying the historical record is best left to Democrats.
BOOKMARK
It is doom for sure...
Definitely not a “left-wing” site. The quote has been attributed more times to Franklin than anyone else. That’s good enough for me.

For an honest man, only the truth is "good enough."
And the truth is that Benjamin Franklin never wrote such a thing, nor did any of his contemporaries report him saying it.
It is a fictitious quote.
I didn’t hear him say it, but most attribute the words to Franklin.
