GM rolls out new electric mini-car at LA Auto Show [Doubling Down on Failure]

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors is giving its Chevrolet Spark a jolt of electricity.

An all-electric version of the mini-car will debut this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It goes on sale this summer in California, Oregon, Canada and South Korea, where it's made. Other markets will follow.

Unlike the Chevrolet Volt sedan, which can run in all-electric mode but also has a backup gas engine, the Spark EV is a pure electric. GM won't say how far the car will go on a charge, but says it will be a top performer among the small number of EVs available. The current leader, the electric Ford Focus sedan, can go 76 miles on a charge.

When I added on to my house recently I debated wiring an outside outlet.
It dawned on me that in the 25 years I lived here, I used an outside outlet maybe 5 times. Not enough to justify installing one.
If I need power outside, I will use the wall outlet I installed just inside the garage door.

I thought the Volt only got about 30 miles on battery before the ICE kicked in.

A Volt hybrid gets about 40 miles (or less) on a full charge and has an engine backup for a low battery condition (to charge the battery and get its owner to his destination). The new Voltette (aka Spark) is all-electric and has how many miles per charge with no backup for low battery power? How stupid are these people at Government Motors? This is nothing more than an overpriced golf cart.

Buy a VW Diesel.

You can get the same 45mpg in a real car.

If I were a South Korean living in South Korea, lived 5 miles from work, and could afford afford to pay about a $10,000 premium for an EV, I might consider buting one of these.

Government Motors has its head so far up Obama’s rear end you can see the logo when he opens his pie hole.

Spark?

I'd suggest Spank, Spit, Stink or Spew instead.

"he get’s to charge up at work for free too"

That explains why his electric bill has not gone up

Good one....and after a mile or two (if you’re lucky) that’s exactly what it’ll do.

"You have to really manage and plan trips to ensure you don’t get stranded somewhere and you can’t refuel/recharge like you can with a gas operated vehicle."

I was talking with a liberal relative over the Holiday about all-electric cars (non hybrids) and he claimed they operate just like a normal car. I said OK when I run out of gas out on the road I can go and get a can of gas start the car and be on my way. Show me how that works with an all-electric car>

He couldn't.

I asked him to plan a trip from Cincy Ohio to Cleavland and back using an all electric Prius. I can do it in 9 hours with a break for lunch in my gas powered car. He can't even get to Columbus one way without stopping for a recharge of around 4 hours or more. It would take him 3 or more full recharges to go one way.

He thought you just pulled into the electric filling station and filled up the electric tank in like 5 minutes and went on your way just like a real car.

“I guess what pisses me off is that he pays no road taxes on the electricity like the rest of us do when we fill up.”

Not to worry.

Within 15 years, you (and he) will be paying a “mileage tax” along with the gas tax that you now pay. The miles you drive will be automatically tallied and reported via GPS by the new in-car transmitters that all new vehicles will come equipped with. You’ll be sent a monthly road use bill to pay, just as you are sent monthly utility bills today.

Oh, you’ve got an older vehicle without the GPS equipment? In that case you’ll be required to report to your local “mileage check station” bi-annually so your mileage can be reported. Failure to do so will result in your being billed for a (high) “fixed road usage rate”.

Guess you won’t be so “pissed off” then, eh? :)

The pic looks like they took the front end of the (now discontinued) Pontiac Vibe, and mated it to the rear end of the KIA “Soul”.

The car is being built in Korea, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some kind of partnership between GM and KIA for the design/manufacturing.

BTW, I actually like KIA’s Soul model — nice compact runabout for around-town, looks like it might be good for retired folks (easy entry/exit, etc.). But this thing looks ugly...

I'd suggest Spank, Spit, Stink or Spew instead.

Splat, Sputter, doesn't matter as it's Scrap. Spark: an ignited particle produced by one hard body striking against another. That's the only attention these things will get as they sputter to a stop and get slammed by regular common-sense vehicles.
