How well run are Americas 50 states? The answer depends a lot on where you live.
Every year, 24/7 Wall St. conducts an extensive survey of all fifty states in America. Based on a review of data on financial health, standard of living and government services by state we determine how well each state is managed. For the first time, North Dakota is the best run. California is the worst run for the second year in a row.

5.Blue
50.Blue
49.Blue
48.Blue
47.Red
46.Blue
I think the Ration speaks for itself, even with Yahoo's idiotic terms.
I am surprised that Arizona is number 47. The others appear to be fly-over country. Hahahaha.
IMO, Iowa is more purple than red. Your point is still valid, of course.
I would basically agree. Don’t how AZ wound up on the bad boy list. Thought Jan Brewer was doing a good job, especially on illegal immigration.
I always thought Texas should be up there: They have:
1) No state income tax.
2) Right to work
3) Tort reform
4) Drill baby drill
5) An enforced capital punishment.
6) Gun rights
7) A pro-business environment and state government.
Could you ask for more?
I would also add Wisconsin under Walker and Kasich under Ohio and Indiana under both Pence and his predecessor to the well-managed list.
I live in CA. I can attest: We are the worst of the worse, only our national government in DC is more poorly mismanaged.
The article discusses the methodology a bit. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be of the “raising taxes = fiscal responsibility” persuasion.
Forgot to mention, Texas also has a part time state legislature-—the state really does subscribe to the first rule of governance: Do no harm.
Indiana really made some great reforms and strides under Mitch Daniels. I suspect Mike Pence will add to that.
Fixed.
Guess why.
AZ spends too way much trying to make liberals happy - which is impossible - but our government seems reasonably competent, otherwise. I wouldn’t say 47th - somewhere in the 20’s, maybe.
50. Dark blue
49. Dark blue
48. Dark blue
47. Light blue to purple
46. Dark blue
And it isn't polite to say it, but #5 goes up a few notches because it is mostly white and #47 goes down a few notches because it has a large population of a certain minority which it isn't polite to point out.
Yes.
I want a JOB there!
Get me OUT of California!
And I'm not talking about Apache, Mormons or Navajo.
“AZ has 19% below the poverty line.
Guess why.”
Because of evil white men?
I’m sure if you moved there you would find one rather quickly.
I’d like to get the hell out of Dodge as well. Only family considerations keep me here, hence my screen name.
I had Iowa as Blue.
They voted for Ubama TWICE, and I sure as hell don't know why the Republicans insist on start their primary in a Blue State.
I say Iowa can join the other liberal hell holes in oblivion.
I agree Iowa is more purple. Even my left leaning students aren’t completely brainwashed. I have a number of students who grew up on farms (hard work) or go to church and aren’t afraid to admit it in public. They may have brought you Obama, but there are too many small towns here, too many places where people still know what it is to be American, for us to be completely blue.
Iowa is an anomoly. Yes on the presidential is quite blue, voting twice for the Marxist and usually in the Democrat column for president.
But statewide, it does have A GOP governor and state legislature. The people there may be dovish on foreign policy, but they are also frugal on spending. I would have to imagine Iowa is a basically well managed state that keeps it spending in line and manages its finances responsibily.
TX is okay but 8) sent Kay Bailey Moron Hutchinson to the US Senate.
But I can’t talk...the idiots I live with in TN sent Lamar! Alexander and Bob Porker Corker.
You complain about Kay Bailey to me!!!!!!!!!!
Look with what I’m stuck with——Boxer and Feinstein in there fore decades!!!!!!! Throw in for good measure Nancy Pelousy and Maxine Waters.
PLEASE DO NOT COMPLAIN TO ME!!!!!!!!
You forgot about My Favorite Martian - Henry Waxman.
I feel your pain.
I’d give my left nut to have Kay Bailey here in CA.
My mayor is Don Juan Villaassahola
My congressman is Xavier Becerra
My governor is Moonbeam
My senators are Boxer and Feinstein.
PLEASE send Kay baby——I’ll take her!!!!!!!
And, we (CA) have passed a bill that will increase taxes on the wealthy ($250,000 and up) as well as an increase in the state's sales tax! Wooohooo! Soon we'll be number 57!
My state is run by a bunch of complete dumb@sses.
I think Iowa is blue, in presidential elections for sure!
I too, live in the formerly great State of California.
My wife is a native Californian, but last night, after nearly 40 years in the Golden State, agreed that if we found a compabable place in another state (OR, CO, UT or VA), she would be open to moving.
Prop. 30’s passage means that the top 10% now pay 80% of the State’s taxes. Funny, those fat union pensions are just under the threshold typically and are not subject to the millionaire’s tax that starts at $250K.
Sacramento is as dysfunctional as the LA or Berkeley City counsels. Libtards on full display with failure in their wake. I want OUT.
I’m an escapee from Illinois. I know whereof you speak.
Free Money NOT to grow crops has its benefits. Iowa has been in the cookie jar for many years.
Good God...can't speak for the other states but avoid VA like the plague.Go to NC instead...not *nearly* as filthy (politically/socially).
1. North Dakota
2. Wyoming
3. Nebraska
4. Utah
5. Iowa
All of those states are great places to live!!
50. California
Why ain't I surprised??
49. Rhode Island
I'm Surprised!! I mean it is a blue state, but I thought it would be Mass.
48. Illinois
I'm Shocked!!! /s (I thought it would be #49!!)
47. Arizona
Shocked!!
46. New Jersey
Not New York??
I wonder where CT is on the list??
Don’t be surprised if obama uses his magic pen to make fracking illegal. North Dakota will be closed for business.
The fact is he has pitted 26 states aginst the other 24.
Ask Mitt.
I grew up in VA. Rural. Not NoVA.
We are not red! They are red. Red is for commies. People, we have to stop accepting how they define us. Since, Red is their true color and reveals far too much about the liberal agenda, the leftist Svengalis did a jedi mind trick getting us to accept the label of red. It is dumb for us to deny political history and accept this redefinition. We are true blue and always have been.

We are not red! I will reject their made-up reality and substitute the actual reality.
But, it's simple as to why AZ is where it is financially...
Dimcrats moving to AZ to escape high taxation that they created in CA - continue voting Dims into office in there!
I have one tiny bit of respite in Prescott Valley, AZ - it's among the last conservative redoubts left in AZ. BUT, it's changing faster with more stupid Dims moving in every day!
Having lived in AZ...I can offer these observations.
There’s really no major industry in the state. They have some agriculture, but it’s nothing to brag about. The military presence in the state helps. So they live mostly off tourism and the old folks who run down at snow-birds.
Outside of Flagstaff, Tucson, and Phoenix...you can generally live off $25k a year easily in the state.
As for wealthy folks living in AZ? It’s nice to visit but there’s not a big segment of wealth in AZ.
