no it will be rounded UP to the nearest dollar to avoid coins alltougether. This is just a sales tax. The rounding up part becomes a sales tax TAKEN by the government for “the collective good.”

No. Just making a point that some merchants will take advantage of customers by rounding up to the next dime, when customers can still use pennies to pay the fractional dime amount.
Nickel has some pretty strong mojo, I guess. The 1.75”D shaft on my boat is made of Monel, which is an alloy of copper, nickel, a bit of silicon and iron.It's silver gray in color, when not covered in barnacles. And it's both tougher and more corrosion resistant than stainless steel. On the downside, it costs more.
The change happened when I was in high school chemistry class. You could melt the (then) new zinc pennies in a bunsen burner but not the older copper ones. Then you got yelled at by the chemistry teacher for screwing around and dripping zinc into the burner. :-)

I saw a woman at the check out in front of me use a card to purchase a small package of potato chips, maybe 39¢ or so and that was her only purchase, also don't know if it was a debit, credit or EBT card.
I’m still holding out for the return of a 20¢ coin.

My boss has a card which is his emergency card, but something in the terms keeps it fee free if it’s used once a month, he doesn’t want to put anything major on it because it’s for emergencies, so once a month he buys a pack of gum with it. Says he feels silly doing it, but it’s better than a fee.
A nickel is the other ratio: 25% nickel, 75% copper.
The silver color can throw you. I once cast 10,000# of lead into sailboat ballast. Giant propane blast burner, using a steel cauldron on a pivot that I welded up. 100#, two ingots, at a time. Quite memorable. Did it by daylight and at night, and this thread causes me to recollect the amazing color tricks that lead makes as it heats to liquid and beyond.
(You need a lot of “superheat,” or degrees of heat above the melting point, for successful casting on big pours.)
Did you ever see a freshly landed ocean fish like a mahi/dorado/dolphin? The fish, not the mammal. They “flash” through many vivid “metallic” colors as they’re landed and they’re perishing. So did the molten lead, going through bright silver, gold, bronze, green etc.
I’m not sure if this is related to why a 75% copper “nickel” is silver in color, but it’s interesting.

Dollar Bills last a matter of about 6 months. They can’t be recycled. They’re shredded and dumped into landfills. Then more money is spent printing new batches. Wasted money! Don’t know if this happens all over the country, but here in Ohio, they periodically disinfect the bills, and spray them with some obnoxious perfume. Perhaps the perfume is the disinfectant. Makes your wallet stink. They are known to carry all sorts of bacteria, germs, and viruses. The coins are naturally disinfectant, and can be recycled. You only need to carry a couple. They should print more two dollar bills, as they have a lifetime several times that of the filthy, germy singles.

I may be just cynical about this but nickels actually contain a good bit of nickel so they have some intrinsic value
