LAUSD 'jails' fill with teachers as misconduct complaints rise

They call it "teacher jail" - the administrative offices where nearly 300 Los Angeles Unified educators accused of misconduct spend months on end reading, blogging or texting.

The cost is enormous: $1.4 million a month in salaries while district and law-enforcement investigations proceed, and $865,000 to hire substitutes to fulfill their classroom duties.

Los Angeles Unified officials insist the cost is worth it - the price the district has to pay for years of downplaying or ignoring suspected abuse. That practice exploded into a major scandal in February with revelations of longtime patterns of misconduct by teachers at Telfair Elementary in Pacoima and Miramonte Elementary in South L.A

Now, under a new zero-tolerance policy, scores of educators accused of misconduct have been pulled from classrooms and are facing dismissal. The number of housed teachers has more than doubled in the last 18 months.

Even grabbing a student's arm or looking down a girl's blouse triggers a full-scale investigation, with the district moving aggressively to fire those found to have endangered the well-being of students.

"You touch a child inappropriately, expect to lose your job," said David Holmquist, the district's general counsel. "We have zero tolerance for inappropriate touching and that probably hasn't always been the case, to this degree."

That total of 300 includes 50 teachers who have been placed on unpaid status as the district moves to fire them. Officials say there also are "a handful" of teachers who have successfully appealed their dismissals and are collecting their salary, but who officials do not want back in the classroom.

I'm all for a teacher's right to due process, but after reading this article, the current system gives the advantage to the students, especially those who aren't really interested in learning or adhering to any rules of discipline.

Nebulous charges like “made me feel uncomfortable” will lead to calls for universal, full time videotaping of all teaching and all interactions. Also, if looking down a girls blouse is a chargeable offense, the obvious solution is to hire only gay teachers, sarc/

“Nebulous charges like “made me feel uncomfortable” will lead to calls for universal, full time videotaping of all teaching and all interactions.”

You might want to actually read the particulars of some of the cases in the article and a link there to another. I think “spoon feeding” children your semen is extreme, as is fondling your daughters or putting cockroaches on their blindfolded faces. These cretins should be dead, not just be being paid while their cases are “investigated.”

Didn’t say anything like specific charges like you indicated. I indicated charges like “made me feel uncomfortable” will lead to calls for universal recorded surveillance. For that matter, what you indicated would lead to the same call.

The "feel uncomfortable" one is a lawyer trick. I know because something similar happened to me not three weeks ago. I leave my ex's belongings on the porch for her to retrieve. The front door is locked and I never saw her, spoke to her, nothing. I am taking a shower when I can hear over the shower itself my door being beaten like its nobody's business. Police at my door wanting to question me about why she was made to "feel un-comfortable".
Now, after about 45 minutes, its evident, she's using local law enforcement to harass me, hell, they get it too only without really saying as much. They go away and as far as I can tell, they have no issues with me. Her on the other hand; I don't think they suffer stupid lawyer tricks lightly.

for those that remembered what math was used for:

# administrators: 300
# unpaid teachers: 50
# paid teachers & admin: 250

monthly cost: $1.4m

AVERAGE monthly salary: $ 5,600
AVERAGE yearly salary: $ 67,200

AVERAGE individual income in the district (zip: 90048):

$ 27,117

DO NOT let anyone tell you teachers are under paid. they receive 2-3 times the average per person salary in their districts... and for only 9 months of the year

pursuing a case against the 28-year LAUSD veteran for touching the girl, as well as one boy who said Traweek had hugged him

Sad.

Long ago I worked in a school in Des Plaines, IL. The principal Dr N.F. would occasionally meet the incoming students. A sight to see as they flocked to her like a magnet!

A hug for all of them!

We are giving up to much for political correctness. And we are now required to have weirdos as Scoutmasters.

Sad.
