John Boehner: No tax cuts for middle class without tax cuts for top two percent
Washington Post ^ | 11/28/2012 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 11/28/2012 3:44:23 PM PST by SeekAndFind

As you know, GOP Rep. Tom Cole made waves today by urging Republicans to give in to the Dem demand that they extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone under $250,000. Cole argued this would remove the leverage Dems have and give the GOP more leverage to fight to extend the high-end tax cuts later, since Dems want the fiscal cliff averted and also want a debt ceiling hike.

Today John Boehner rejected Cole’s suggestion. But in the process, he said something pretty revealing:

*****

“I told Tom earlier in our conference meeting that I disagreed with him,” Boehner told reporters after a closed-door meeting of the House Republican Conference. “He’s a wonderful friend of mine and a great supporter of mine. But raising taxes on the so-called top 2 percent — half of those people are small-business owners that pay their taxes through their personal income tax filing every year. The goal here is to grow the economy and to cut spending.

“We’re not going to grow the economy if we raise tax rates on the top two rates,” the Speaker added. “It’ll hurt small businesses. It’ll hurt our economy. That’s why it’s not the right approach. We’ll willing to put revenue on the table as long as we’re not raising rates.”

*****

In Boehner’s telling, extending the tax cuts just for those under $250,000 is simply indistinguishable from raising them on those Boehner himself describes as the “top two percent.” But Cole isn’t suggesting a tax hike for the top two percent. Rather, Cole wants Republicans to extend the low end tax rates right now, and then take a stand against raising the high end ones in the fiscal cliff talks.

I've never figured this. When the economy is in the crapper, the POTUS gets the blame. When the economy is humming, the POTUS gets the credit (Clinton).

If the republicans give in, the economy WILL crater, and Obama will blame the dumb$hit republicans for AGREEING with him. And the MSM will wonder just HOW the republicans raised taxes in a recession.

If I were a house member, I'd simply refuse to do anything.

Let Obama explain why HE wanted EVERYONES taxes to go up.

Play it like "Turnabout Intruder" on Star Trek. Once the crew realizes that "Kirk" is actually an imposter, they simply stand down and do nothing.

"You will OBEY my orders, you will OBEY!"

Let the dems eat it, and explain why. The MSM won't care, but Repubs do not have to play.

Let them vote "present".

Bohner should just give the dems every thing they want...

Hold a news conference to explain to the american people that Obama and the Senate majority leader Reid now have everything they want...because they refuse to compromise on anything reasonable with us...

We oppose it... because it is bad policy, will hurt everyday working people, drive unemployment up and kill growth, drive up more debt... and not solve our fiscal problems at all...

When we dip into another recession you will know who to blame...squarely on the administration and the Senate

We tried to work with them, but refuse to work with us...

Now the American people will have a front row seat...on a slow train wreck...

Remember who is responsible this in 2016

[Any Republican with balls ought to bring a sign each day with the number of days since a BUDGET was last passed.]

Obama’s words from Winter of 2010 that the economy was too fragile to raise anybody’s taxes need to be thrown back at him. Technically the economy is weaker now than two years ago.

Actually, I am getting around to objecting to it. Let the whole tax cut package expire, put more of the 47 percent back on the tax rolls

That is my position now...get rid of the tax credits for layabouts pumping out kids to get the $1,500 credit...

I hardly think the 4 billion sent to Mexico last year for legal children of illegal invaders by the IRS via tax credits will be missed...

Double the tax rate on the working poor...works for me...about damn time they paid their fair share anyway...

Now there is a plan... suppose everyone who voted for Romney just refused to send in the 1040 in April - or perhaps just those self employed since the employer would already have withheld the employed’s taxes. A lot of those top 2 % ers file their own... what would they do? Throw 10 million people in tax jail/tax court... talk about gumming up the system... Of course the fear of reprisal would keep folks from doing that but it sure would be a nice form of revolt.

Raising revenue by raising the tax rate for “wealthy” is not the real goal..it’s classic envy, class warfare, and “social justice” in the minds of mind-less libs. Greta just had interview with a real light-weight Sen. Casey (PA) and though she tried to get him to answer if it’s worth risking lowering job creation and slowing the economy to get 8.5 days worth of revenue by taxing “the rich” he had no answer and obfuscated the issue. He was spinning like a roulette wheel... of course it isn’t worth it...and is counterproductive unless your real goal is to punish “the rich” which I submit is Obama’s true racially and class directed objective. My psychiatric training tells me Obama is severely conflicted by his “white half” and compensates by pushing his agenda of liberal social justice ... i.e. racism and classism!

Why would anyone believe anything Boehner says? He is on a self-destructive mission in the name of self-preservation.

Simple answer: Conservatives in the House don't trust him.

So why did they reelect him as Speaker then? These Republican lawmakers are an "oxymoron." They aren't "republican" and they won't or can't pass "laws".

So the GOP should hold a news conference to explain to the public how the Democrats are refusing to compromise with them? And, um, how exactly will this message reach the American populace? Do you seriously expect to see it on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN, etc.? Fox MAY run it, but isn’t that just preaching to the choir?

Well, here we go. The Democrats want to help the middle class and the Republicans are out to help the rich. Didn’t take long. The Republicans fall for it every time.

didnt take long ??? it never ceased from being the script...

any day now, 'the boss' will arrange a no disqualification cage match between the lead superstars, and likely will himself be the ref...

RE :”Well, here we go. The Democrats want to help the middle class and the Republicans are out to help the rich. Didn’t take long. The Republicans fall for it every time.”

Just like exactly a year ago on FICA tax cuts/

Bohner knew that he lost this fight on election day. This is HIS standard act to make believe he is taking a hard principled stand until enough of his House members BEG him to unconditionally surrender to O, which he knows is coming.

This is a disastrous strategy for his party and great for Obama BUT it keeps him (Bohner) safe from inter-party Speaker challenges, which is why he keeps doing it.

The script : “We will not budge an inch on our positions” until he is surrounded, out of ammunition and the house he is in is burning down, then it is unconditional surrender time.
And this is the only act he knows and so he keeps repeating it.

Here I summarized some key things that led to this disaster:

Look, this is like saying Justin Bieber didn’t take your advice when he went up against George Foreman, so he lost.

Boehner doesn’t have it in him. He needs to be replaced.

There’s nothing wrong with explaining how wealthy people’s money contributes to the overall economy. There’s nothing wrong with explaining why small businesses are injured and shed jobs when taxes are raised on anyone making over $250k per year.

There are many valid points to be made that refute the idea that ‘the rich’ deserve to pay more. And by forgoing telling the public about them, we allow the Left to continue to demagogue the Rich ad nausium.

We have got to start defending our positions, because one by one they are being picked off. And once they’ve taken out the people they want, they’ll come for you and me.

I’ll defend the rich till my dying breath. I hope to be one of them one day. Most people can identify with that.

We have a timid milk-toast at the helm. Who knew an Ashley Wilks figure wasn’t what we needed right now?

Good description. But you forgot the part where the tears roll down his cheeks onto his suit lapel, then he snots all over his handkerchief while everyone else in the room does an eyeroll.

“Technically the economy is weaker now than two years ago.”

Unfortunately, the Hussein Heads have their fraudulent BLS numbers with which to rebut that.

Tax cuts and major spending cuts across the board or we all fall in the conniving odinga trap in support of class warfare. Another sneaking commie trap to enrich the marxist pigs in DC. May odinga and his 3 *itches all rot in hell.

No, you can’t escape. The IRS is setup to simply loot your accounts electronically. If you are all in cash and own property, they will simply seize it and sell it for a fraction of its true value. If you are employed, they simply jack your wages. The system is corrupt and rigged against all of the makers. We are witnessing the african marxist model of government.
