Behind the Susan Rice meeting meltdown
Politico ^ | 11/28/12 | SCOTT WONG and SEUNG MIN KIM

In just two quick meetings on Capitol Hill, Susan Rice may have blown up any goodwill she had with the very senators she’ll need for confirmation if she’s ever tapped as the next secretary of state.

Over the past two days, four key Republican senators have emerged from private meetings to blast the United Nations ambassador’s explanation about what happened during and after the deadly attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

It’s not clear what Rice said behind closed doors to anger all these senators, but it’s obvious the meetings went badly and this was hardly a nominee-in-waiting charm offensive.

Even Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, just the type of moderate Republican who might help break a filibuster on a nomination, said there were still too many questions about why Rice incorrectly characterized the Sept. 11 assault in five Sunday talk show interviews as the result of spontaneous protests at the same time the Libyan president was calling it a terrorist attack.

“I don’t understand why she would not at least qualify her response to that question,” Collins told reporters after emerging from a 75-minute, closed-door meeting with Rice.

The Wednesday meeting in a secure briefing room in the Capitol basement came a day after a similar sit-down Rice had with three key voices on foreign policy and defense issues went terribly wrong. GOP Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, all members of the Armed Services Committee, said they were more “troubled” about the Benghazi affair than they had been before their meeting with Rice.

And Graham and Ayotte went so far as to say they would place a hold on her possible nomination.

“If she were nominated tomorrow, I would hold her because we still have questions that have not been answered,” Ayotte told POLITICO

Rice apparently went into the meetings with the 'I Won' attitude typical of this administration.

What I wonder is will her obvious disrespect shown the RINO senators effect their obviously desperate desire to get along with the Obama regime in its second term.

“I don’t see how John Kerry is an improvement over Susan Rice, or Hillary Clinton, for that matter. “

You realize he served in Vietnam, right? He doesn’t like to talk about it but he did.

"These SENATORs are telling us that Susan Rice isn’t even answering their questions behind closed doors ..."

And likely they will still confirm her.

The woman to beat Hillary is Liz Warren, not Rice.

Well, Liz Warren does have the "Minority" box checked, since she is a Native American. So in the racist game of Democrat Primary Rock/Paper/Scissors, Native-American-Woman beats Woman.

Can you say “recess appointment?”

Constitutionally, though, the “end-around” type recess appointment does not satisfy constitutional muster. A real recess appointment has to do with a crisis loss of a critical member of the administration during a constitutional recess.

Some day, someone will challenge this “recess appointment” trash interpretation that has been abused by both parties for generations.

If she fails confirmation, then Zero will give her a job and send here everywhere as if she was SOS while leaving the position officially open, playing it up in the media that those RACIST Republicans are just playing politics. The public has no idea that Benghazi was about gun running. This is an “up yours” in your face assertion of power and that the President MAY not be held accountable for anything.

Talk is cheap. I will believe when she is sent home without a new job.

Spot-on...This is all theatre.
o is using her as cover to deflect any real investigation of Benghazi.

This will continue until the recess at which time o will make a recess appointment to SOS.

My reading of her career indicates that Rice is just another bad-tempered affirmative action dullard promoted way beyond her competence by guilty white Liberals. Her snarky closed-door sessions with senators proves it. How DARE they challenge her or The One! A close look at her student and employment records would, I believe, be an eye-opener.

I don't mind if she's eventually SoS--she's no worse than Hillary.

However, I do mind if she get away with not answering questions.

Frankly, get the truth...make her look like the venal, stupid fool that she is, and then put her into office. She can start work crippled with humiliation.

Suits me.

Just get the truth out for the families who lost their people.

Obama Ben’s diversive Rice is just a side dish. Unless someone has serious hearings about Benghazi on the menu, she’s only going to take the edge off their appetite. Ignore her and get down to business! (Or does it somehow matter who becomes O’s SoS?)

PLACE A HOLD?!! How about a COMPLETE DISQUALIFICATION!!! Can't this Party EVER play HARDBALL?!! I am getting awfully sick of both Parties, that is assuming they are even on different teams.

Isn’t Obama just using Rice in two common Washington games: 1) “Look over here everybody...it’s a red herring”; and 2) sending out a dummy to use up the opposition’s ammo. I doubt that he cares whether Rice is Secretary of State. When the real candidate comes around, the Republican Senators will have used up their ability to say “no”, and will go along out for fear that the media say Republicans have nothing but negativity.

Solution — take the focus off Rice and put it on Obama.

How many here on FR believe that Susan Rice ws a distraction, so that the Senate would approve John Kerry for Sec of State or Sec of Defense?

Kerry should NEVER hold any position in the Cabinet or any position such as Ambassador.

He is a total coward who lied about his Viet Nam service & received medals he didn’t deserve to get.

He ran from action, and lied about others.

He testified in front of Congress in his fatigues and badmouthed true members of the US military who are heroes.

He is a royal POS, and I think Rice was a distraction to make Kerry look better and get confirmation.

We need the Swift Boat Veterans to come forward again & remind Congress just how despicable Kerry is.

Is his wife still alive? Or is she just a taxidermy experiment now??

You are correct that Rice is an embarrasment but she is Obama’s embarrasment.

John Kerry would be the Nation’s embarrasment in the cabinet and a slap in the face to every veteran if he is named SecDef. The start of the entire baby-killer branding of the US military abroad began with his testimony and agit prop campaign. Any earlier time in history he would have been imprisioned or executed for treason.
