State Senator Proposes Dissolving City Of Detroit
CBS Detroit ^ | Thursday, November 29, 2012

It would no doubt be controversial, but the idea of dissolving the fiscally struggling city of Detroit and absorbing it into Wayne County is being tossed around in Lansing.

WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports some state Republicans are talking about giving the city the option to vote itself into bankruptcy. And mid-Michigan Senator Rick Jones said all options should be considered — including dissolving the city.

“If we have to, that is one idea we have to look at. We really have to look at everything that is on the table,” Jones said. “Again, if this goes to federal bankruptcy, every employee down there will suffer, the city will suffer and the vultures will come in and take the jewels of Detroit and they will be gone.”

Local consultant Tom Watkins has proposed this in the past, but the idea has never played well among Detroiters.

In a live interview on WWJ Newsradio 950 Wednesday morning, Gov. Rick Snyder said he wouldn’t count anything out.

“Detroit needs to solve their problems, but they need support and we’ve been very supportive partners, I believe, in terms of offering different ideas and thoughts. And I just encourage them to work harder about working better together,” Snyder said.

Relatives on my dad's side of the family worked for Ford for several generations. They quit Detroit in the 60s. It was ugly before the riots...

With Detroit it always comes down to "what's in it for me". The fight over Belle Isle is a perfect example. The place is falling apart so the state wants to take over and fix it up but Detroiters just want the state to pay for it and Detroit keep the revenue generated from races and other events.

I personally think it would be a lot wiser to cut the size of Detroit down to the downtown area and annex the rest into surrounding townships. (if they’ll take it)

Some will do better than others.

This will result in the suburbs paying the bills, while vote fraud in Detroit will insure Detroit dominates Wayne County politics. No thanks.

Better: if Detroit is bankrupt, the state appoints a financial dictator to get it back on its feet again, auditing all the books, firing all the deadwood in city government, and cutting way back on welfare to make being on welfare a less attractive option.

See how fast they get their act together with that hanging over their heads.

I’m telling you, close all the prisons in America and just dump the violent offenders in Detroit. It would be cheaper, and the entertainment factor would be incredible. Think “Escape from New York” and “Running Man” combined.

I looked at the video. They think the money is being stolen. Some may be, but they don’t understand how taxes work. It’s just government money.

gangster city.

Oakland, CA and Detroit, MI. Two shining examples of...

Nothing.

Since “Enterprise Zones” did nothing substantial to halt the overall decline of Detroit, I’d propose the opposite. Make it a welfare free zone. No public assistance allowed. No subsidized public transportation. No section 8 help. No bridge cards issued or accepted. No WIC payments. No disability. No Obama phones. No school lunch assistance. Do that and just watch the rats flee the sinking ship. Then once the parasites and criminals are gone, watch how fast the area comes back.

Actually the free enterprise zone would be fine if Detroit were whittled down to just the downtown area where actual business is still being done and money being made.

“Then once the parasites and criminals are gone, watch how fast the area comes back.”

I’d rather they stay there, rather than have a massive “Dependent Redistribution Scheme” by which these creatures are moved into Section 8 housing in productive areas. If you don’t have Section 8 near you, you would very quickly.

They’ve been leaving Detroit for a long time. Its one of the factors that is driving Michigan rightward.

Motor City?

"Detroit" was slang for the American auto industry. How can Obama and Biden run around the country claiming that they "saved GM" while Detroit itself is in ruins and is considering dissolution?

Everyone's gone crazy!

That’s good news; I always wondered why people would want to be poor in cold cities when it is probably much more comfortable in the South. I know it is all about the freebies, but even so the cold stinks (I hate winter more with every passing year).

If I lost everything I would get onto 95 south and grub rides until I reached an area where one could sleep comfortably under a bridge in wintertime...

LOL the cold is a good thing.

In the prepper threads everybody talks about heading south but I’m staying right here. In the zombie apocalypse, I’ll have to work harder to prepare for winter but if done right, winter is relaxation time.

You certainly have a lot more self-reliant people in the colder climes; in rural areas the perpetually-dependent multi-generational welfare class doesn’t exist. They would die in the first winter.
