Sandy caused $37 billion in damage in NJ: Christie

TRENTON, NJ — Gov. Chris Christie says Superstorm Sandy caused $36.8 billion in damage in New Jersey.

Christie is requesting that amount, which is greater than his state's entire budget, from the federal government.

Christie says more than 30,000 homes or businesses were destroyed or sustained substantial damage from last month's storm.

I live in Florida where we basically pay our own way via homeowner insurance premiums. We moved here from Northern Virginia where I paid $832 for insurance on a $600k house. Bought a property in Florida for $300k and almost died when I got hit with a $5k insurance bill. After spending over $20k on hurricane resistant windows, bill dropped to just over $3k. This for a property with a 2% hurricane deductible and in a location that has been hit only once in the last 50 years. Bailing out NY and NJ is only a vote buying agenda and I object to it.

If you look at the above link, this town was on top of the list of damage. In addition, to homes the infrastructure was demolished.

You can check on Trulia or search for towns such as Bayhead, Beach Haven, Point Pleasant Beach, Margate, etc., for just the home values. The infrastructure in some of these areas looked war-torn. The police station in Bayhead, completely gone. The fire department in another town, completely gone. Not to mention the coastline itself. The fishing industry, marinas, etc.

Say what you want about Christie, say what you want about NJ, but the fact remains that the destruction of this area from this storm was/is a nightmare. I can't imagine what the cost will be to rebuild coastline to protect the inland from future storms will be.

Using your formula, sadly, I imagine the cost to be even higher than currently estimated.

Just why rebuild on shoreline where you can be guaranteed another storm will flood/destroy it again? Shouldn’t those who choose to live in such areas have some personal responsibility? No...not in nobamaworld. Happy times are here again.

I am not saying it is not a nightmare. I am saying that it should not result in a $37 billion payment from the taxpayers of the other 49 states. And definitely without a lot more hard facts. See the link below where FEMA's estimate was 500 buildings destroyed and 5,000 more with major damage. If that number is correct, even if you add in infrastructure, $37b is still a ludicrous figure. And I do not think that federal money should be used to rebuild industry (such as marinas) right on the Atlantic coastline, where this could (obviously) happen again.

I can't go on that link, my computer locks up. Honestly, I am not sure how FEMA works. I imagine most of the people had flood insurance, especially the marinas. It is required in NJ if you have a mortgage within the flood plain. The figure for overall damages sounds correct, if not more. I don't think FEMA covers the total. There were many job and business losses due to this. While some may profit from this, others will never recover.

The same type of storm could happen again, but it is considered unlikely. There is 121 miles of the "Jersey shore." The surge was so high, the ocean met the bay up and down the coast. In addition, in North Jersey (much more densely populated) there were people that did not have flood insurance.

When these type of disasters occur in other parts of the country, everyone has and will pay. We will all pay either through taxes or insurance rates. Regardless of who or how likeable the governor is. My only hope is that they will use the money properly and rebuild wisely. This is not only a natural disaster to the area, but an economic one as well.

I will agree with you that the total estimated damages should not be covered by FEMA. People were paying insurance fees, as well. In any case, there are people that feel fortunate just to be alive. Hopefully, that will carry them through as their lives will never be the same.
