McConnell 'Burst Into Laughter' as Geithner Outlined Obama's Plan
The Weekly Standard ^ | November 29,2012 | FRED BARNES

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, says he “burst into laughter” Thursday when Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner outlined the administration proposal for averting the fiscal cliff. He wasn’t trying to embarrass Geithner, McConnell says, only responding candidly to his one-sided plan, explicit on tax increases, vague on spending cuts.

Geithner’s visit to his office left McConnell discouraged about reaching a “balanced” deal on tax hikes and spending reductions designed to prevent a shock to the economy in January. “Nothing good is happening” in the negotiations, McConnell says, because of Obama’s insistence on tax rate hikes for the wealthy but unwillingness to embrace serious spending cuts

Geithner suggested $1.6 trillion in tax increases, McConnell says, but showed “minimal or no interest” in spending cuts. When congressional leaders went to the White House three days after the election, Obama talked of possible curbs on the explosive growth of food stamps and Social Security disability payments. But since Geithner didn’t mention them, those reductions appear to be off the table now, McConnell says.

Free Republic doesn’t dissapoint, the hatred for Republicans here is just as strong or stronger than anything I’ve seen on PMSNBC or DU.

After three decades of being thrown under the bus by the Republican Party, many Conservatives view the GOP as only being slightly to the right of the Democrats, and little more trustworthy. Last I checked, this is a Conservative forum, not a Republican echo chamber.

At this point, the GOP has to earn my vote. They have slid so far to the left, it isn't automatic any more.

I think someone could win handily if they just changed their name to "None of the Above" and ran third party.

“Free Republic doesn’t dissapoint, the hatred for Republicans here is just as strong or stronger than anything I’ve seen on PMSNBC or DU.”

I respectfully disagree with your over-generalization.

A significant majority here have a lot of respect for at least some Republicans... Reagan, Sarah Palin, Paul Ryan, Rush Limbaugh...

That same great majority have great disdain, hatred if you will, towards the Republican cowards and traitors, but those among that same majority are usually the first to express sympathy or condolences for stricken leftist freaks and their families.

And if you’d ever been to PMSNBC or DU, you would have seen much more than hatred there.

Me, too. What is it, an automatic 1.2 trillion in government cuts? Couldn’t happen to a fatter hog.

Mitch is the reason we have Obama Care. If he had fought hard against it in filibuster, the Dems would have died of apoplexy, but he did not have the balls t9o fight these liberal fascists then, and he doesn’t have the balls now either.

He laughed about the lack of a balanced approach. In case Mitch has not noticed, Obama has not used a balanced approach since he was first inaugurated.Hell Obama doesn’t have a budget, and won’t suggest any entitlement program cuts at all.

Mitch needs to do more than laugh, he needs to attack Obama and ridicule these fascists in the press while he has the stage.

The republicans will make sure they take the blame when the system crashes under its own weight. They should be screaming about the democrats pushing us in to bankruptcy with their spending. Instead they play this game where they pretend that these tax increases and cuts will solve the problem.

Obama wants 1.6T in new taxes (over 10 yrs?). what is the amount of new taxes raised in doing nothing & letting Bush tax cuts expire?

Obama wants $400B in spending cuts (over 10 yrs?). How much in spending cuts are generated by doing nothing? it seems like it was a pittance and excluded quite a bit except defense

does anyone know? I’d like to know just so I can put this crappy proposal in perspective

“There is a huge shadow economy that is bigger than anyone realizes”

BINGO...
And without it, the economy of today’s inner-cities collapses.

But, you can’t tell the Suburban middle-class this. The TV tells them that anyone who thinks that way is CWAZY! Or a rassiss.

My Brother's B-I-L is on Disability. He is in bad shape with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Heart problems. When my Brother asked who he was Voting for, he told him Obama.

My Brother “reminded” him of all of Obama’s failings, but the B-I-L didn't care. He told my Brother that Romney would take away his SS Disability. No matter what my Brother said, he wouldn't listen.

And THAT Ladies and Gentlemen is what we are up against.

Nothing worse than a Kool Aid Drinking Ignorant Drone.

I agree. It’s amazing how often “disabled” translates into “I can’t work but I can still party like a rock star. Therefore, give me monthly checks in perpetuity.”

Now disability is every obese lazy person who has a “backache”. They are everywhere if you start to notice. Disability should be separated from old folks SS, and it should be scrutinized hard. The default should be to nearly always assign them a job doing some menial, non strenuous task that they will not enjoy. If they refuse, no disability check.

Excellent post!

And yes, I've noticed a LOT of young-ish, usually obese lazy people claiming to be on Disability all over Connecticut.

In fact, there are so many working-age people "out and about" on any given day in CT, I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one in CT who ISN'T on Disability or some other kind of government dole.

I agree. It's disgusting how much taxpayer $$ is given to the "disabled" in this country (by that I mean those who aren't truly disabled).

This has GOT to stop somehow. There needs to be case-by-case investigations of everyone on "Disability" to see if they're truly needy. Enough is enough.

spoken like a person who hasn’t had 7 back surgeries, brain surgery, knee surgeries, and a dilauded pain pump implanted in their stomach just so they can walk SOMETIMES. There are people who can’t work because they can’t consistently do anything. I wish you could experience just one day of my pain and frustration and see what you think about disability after that. I worked from age 14 and made good money in my adult life, and I paid into social security so that disability would be there for me. And thank God it is, or I’d be on the street not able to walk. Don’t judge everyone, or even the majority by the few who are fat, lazy, or moochers.

You are correct. Sadly, no matter what happens the Republicans will be blamed because Obama owns the media. Just as sad will be the blame freepers will carry on about also blaming republicans, playing right into the democrats hands.

There will be no cuts and I don’t want my taxes raised. Yes, we are deep in debt in this country but I am willing to pass it along to the younger generation because they voted for the clown.
