FEMA exploring idea of boats to house Sandy victims

Hoping to find a solution for New York and New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy, the federal government announced Thursday it was looking into the possibility of housing residents on boats.

In a request for information notice posted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said they were looking for input from the maritime industry in the hopes of finding rapid and cost-effective housing options on small boats or similar vessels.

FEMA said the purpose of the request was for market research only and to explore whether the maritime industry could offer viable options for residents who remain homeless.

Officials said the vessels they requested ideally would sleep two to six adults and could be standalone boats or interconnected to create a single dwelling made of multiple units.

As of Wednesday, 473,785 households in New York and New Jersey had applied for disaster relief assistance with FEMA. While not all of the families were requesting housing assistance, officials said they continue to work with state and local officials to help all victims of the deadly storm.

Fema should check all those Katrina trailers to see if any are unoccupied and still usable. Then take both of them to NJ.

That should be doable in six months for less than a million bucks.

Anybody watching FNC right now? They keep showing a guy with a gray hoodie complaining at a council meeting last night.

If Chevy Chase and Robert DiNero had a son...? LOL!

So this is the greater NYC area during a sever recession. Anybody care to conjecture what the office space vacancy rate might be for first class office space? Anyone think landlords might be interested in a quick infusion of short-term cash? Anyone the displaced people might be better off in a downtown location than bobbing up and down tethered to a dock?

In our area the FEMA housing thing got pretty weird.

They weren’t officially “winterized” you see...so there were problems with bringing them in for people who had their houses destroyed by flooding.

Now - these are houses that had been stripped to the studs and had no furnaces - but bureaucrats couldn’t send in insulated, heated FEMA trailers because of some red tape.

One town in PA did manage to bring some in for their residents - I’m not sure who managed to pull those strings.

As it turns out, living in a heated trailer is better than squatting in an unheated home.

I would guess these regulations might be preventing them from bringing the trailers into NY & Jersey.
How on earth anyone could propose a houseboat is better winter shelter than a trailer is beyond me.

In the end - there are snobs somewhere who don’t want a bunch of trailers being shipped in to their area.

Whether boats are a good solution or not, the more important issues is if we are going to have a federal agency dealing with this sorta, shouldn’t that agency have thought this through like, five years ago, and have had an execution plan being executed on Day -5 of Hurricane Sandy? With the solution in place on Days 0 and 1 of the Sandy strike?

I can’t wait for Obamacare to be fully implemented.

Hurricane relief opps are comparatively much easier to plan for and execute than the 300 million variations of personal health care occurring afresh 365 days a year.

FEMA is exploring an idea HOW LONG after the hurricane?

Oh wait, election is over. baraq has a tee time.
And he has taxes to raise.

Also heard that homes that were being rebuilt had to comply with epa regs on heater emissions, requiring them to purchase much more expensive heaters.

I was watching Fox News this AM and they showed a Staten Island town hall meeting that was out of control.

It was disgusting to see so many people bitching and moaning to and about FEMA.

Why is it the federal goobermint’s business what happened to your home? Why are you moaning about your insurance settlements to FEMA? Why is it anybody else’s business where you’re now living?

FEMA’s failures are identified by the fact that so many people need it.

Under Bush’s leadership after Katrina about 40,000 people were evacuated from New Orleans within 5 days! Evacuees were sent to shelters and temp housing all over the country

Now I’m sure Texas doesn’t want these folks since they still are dealing with Katrina squatters, but surely Vermont could use some more liberals .... especially more people of color. What says Bernie Sanders, the good socialist Senator from Vermont? Turn Vermont into a FEMA camp - from their voting patterns everyone there loves big govt compassion so just give them even bigger govt.

Or just send the homeless to one of the deactivated military bases located throughout New Englnad. Why NOT?

By the time the feral government gets done 'exploring ideas', most people will already have their lives back together.

You'd THINK the billions of OUR dollars we're forced to chuck down this black hole in the name of preparedness would mean they'd actually be .... ya'know....prepared!

Excellent observations.

Also, when is the press going to notice that FEMA really botched this. There's no excuse for not having any advance plans for this type of event.

But now that the Sacred One is in power, I guess they'll notice probably about the same time they notice that Obamacare won't work, meaning never, even though everything lies in shambles around them.

I thought FEMA had camps and I thought one of the justifications they gave for those camps was to help out in case of a natural disaster. What’s with that?

LOL! I heard they never used those trailers. Maybe FEMA could take them up there, give each person a trailer and a couple of pontoons. They could make their own houseboats.

The only part of any government that works as advertised is the military, and that only works as advertised when they are breaking things and killing people.

Spot on!

Now, fellow FReepers, imagine what all the newly armed bureaucraps from TSAPersons to the Po-lution Po-lice will do when Obama declares an emergency and they begin to act out their ‘Inner A$$hole’ tendencies.
