Jackie DeShannon wrote this in 1973 as a kind of happy ragtime tune. Carnes slowed it down and turned it into one of the darkest, most stunning and beautiful songs of the Eighties. The foundation line is hypnotic. At 0:43, when the harmony opens up, it’s breathtaking.

At first I didn’t like this song. Then one Friday night, after my house had been wired for cable TV, I was blissfully stoned relaxed, watching MTV, when this video came on. The song suddenly made sense. In fact it nearly brought me to tears. I fell in love with it.
