Stirrings of Secession

"When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another ..."

So begins the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies from the king and country to which they had given allegiance since the settlers first came to Jamestown and Plymouth Rock.

The declaration was signed by 56 angry old white guys who had had enough of what the Cousins were doing to them. In seceding from the mother country, these patriots put their lives, fortunes and honor on the line.

Four score and five years later, 11 states invoked the same right "to dissolve the political bands" of the Union and form a new nation. After 620,000 had perished, the issue of a state's right to secede was settled at Appomattox. If that right had existed, it no longer did.

What are we to make, then, of petitions from 25,000 citizens of each of seven Southern states — 116,000 from Texas alone — to secede?

While no one takes this movement as seriously as men took secession in 1861, the sentiments behind it ought not to be minimized. For they bespeak a bristling hostility to the federal government and a dislike bordering on detestation of some Americans for other Americans, as deep as it was on the day Beauregard's guns fired on Fort Sumter.

Our Pledge of Allegiance still speaks of "one nation under God, indivisible," but that is far from the reality in the America of 2012.

The social, cultural, moral and political revolutions of the 1960s, against which Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan inveighed to win their 49-state triumphs, have now captured half of the country.

One America believes our history is a catalog of crimes against people of color, that women have an inviolable right to abortions, that condoms should be handed out to sexually active teens in schools where Darwinism should be taught as revealed truth, while Bibles, prayers and religious symbols should be permanently expelled.

The other America sees all this as unpatriotic, godless and decadent.

One America believes in equality of rights; the other demands equality of results brought about through the redistribution of income and wealth, affirmative action, racial and gender set-asides, and quotas.

One America believes in gun control; the other in gun rights.

Now that Christmas and Easter have been expunged from public schools and the public square and the popular culture has been thoroughly de-Christianized, we Americans seem to have but one holy day of obligation that brings us all together: Super Bowl Sunday.

Where one America divinizes diversity, the other seeks out our lost unity and community. Half the country pays no federal income taxes, but half depends on federal benefits.

The occasions when we come together as one, as after 9/11 and during natural disasters such as Katrina and Sandy, seem few and farther between, and the resurrected unity rarely lasts.

Could today's America come together to build an interstate highway system or send astronauts to the moon, as we did just seven years after John Glenn first orbited the Earth?

Environmentalists would have killed Ike's highway system and the Hoover and Grand Coulee dams, as today they seek to stop the fracking for oil and natural gas and block the Keystone XL pipeline.

As for states seceding, however, is that really a solution to national disintegration? Tens of millions with Blue State mindsets live in Red State America, and vice versa. While folks in Texas may talk of seceding from the Union, folks in Austin talk of seceding from Texas.

Yet we should take seriously what is behind this desire to separate and sever ties, for it mirrors what is happening across our civilization.

The West is decomposing.

British Tories seek to cut ties to the European Union. Scots want to leave Britain. Catalans vote to divorce from Spain, to which they have been wedded since the 15th century. Flemish talk of leaving Walloons behind in Belgium. Northern Europeans are weary of carrying their profligate southern brethren and muse about cutting Greece adrift and letting it float out into the Mediterranean.

And Americans are already seceding from one another — ethnically, culturally, politically. Middle-class folks flee high-tax California, as Third World immigrants, legal and illegal, pour in to partake of the cornucopia of social welfare benefits the Golden Land dispenses.

High-tax states like New York now send tens of thousands of pension checks to Empire State retirees in tax-free Florida. Communities of seniors are rising that look like replicas of the suburbs of the 1950s. People gravitate toward their own kind. Call it divorce, American-style.

What author William Bishop called "The Big Sort" — the sorting out of people by political beliefs — proceeds. Eighteen states have gone Democratic in six straight presidential elections. A similar number have gone Republican.

"Can we all just get along?" asked Rodney King during the Los Angeles riot of 1992. Well, if we can't, we can at least dwell apart.

After all, it's a big country.

Those traitorous running dogs who support Obama's evil policies to destroy the nation deserve to be deserted! The current government, in its entirety, is the enemy of decent Americans who still possess a functioning brain.

Many of us have given our word to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We are now effectively disenfranchised. We are now taxed to death, without recourse, operating under a system of over regulation, no private property, etc. ...

We're going to have to take a defensive stand sooner or later. The time is now.

Folks are still going about their lives, raising kids, saving for retirement and so forth.

What's the spark that sets off the fuse? Who knows, but I don't see Americans standing in solidarity to force change. I hate it, but it's true.

IMHO, what is needed is a civilian militia consisting of law abiding citizens...all nut jobs and looney tune's disallowed.

Meet at a private ranch, rifles unloaded and slung over the shoulder. One, Two, several thousand men meet in solidarity to send a message....we are not going to allow our liberty and freedoms to be stripped from us by a behemoth entity.

Peaceful demonstration with a goal in mind, display the ability to muster like minded men.

well stated! How did this happen? How did this great nation become a nation of takers rather than givers? How did 50% exchange the ideas of liberty, freedom, free enterprise for a gov’t check and cradle to grave care? How were the dominant judao-christian ideas get pushed out of our schools and universities? What a sorry mess were in. I’m almost 60 and have lived in the freest, most blessed country in the history of mankind. But what kind of country are we giving our children? I have a daughter with a masters in science. Can’t find a job with 300,000 other unemployed biologists. Thanks for letting me put my thoughts down. Thank you Free Republic. Thank you Jimrob for letting the few remaining freedom lovers have a forum. “live free or die” “don’t tread on me” Liberty isn’t taught it’s God-given. All we have is the Bible and a noble document the U.S. Constitution to guide us.

As far as most Texans are concerned, the libs in Austin are NOT wanted or needed here. They contribute NOTHING to the well-being of the Republic. Instead, they try to tear it down. As of right now, they are free to peacefully assemble and leave this state for another that adheres more to their communist beliefs. They should probably do so now while they still can. People here have had their belly full of their crap. Enough is enough.

There is a strong historic precedent for what you have outlined. Below is a link to get you started to learn how the militias of East Tennessee and South west Virginia, formed to fight Indians, turned the tide in the Revolutionary War

The Political Divorce is coming. As this article notes, the cultural divorce is already a reality. The details of how the Political Divorce comes about and what it looks like afterwards are still to be determined.

The problem? The government will not let us leave. There is no place to run. The federal government, unbound by the constitution, intends to finish enslaving you wherever you go. The battle for freedom is not far off. If we have the will to be free.

Gay marriage, abortion, removing God from the public square, surge in child molestations, murders...you name it. Yea, we've allowed our nation to drift away from godly principals. If you were God, wouldn't you be a lil PO’d?

Thanx for sharing your thoughts. We are all frustrated to the hilt. Buckle your seatbelt, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

This is NOT about Secession.

It is about a people who see the chains of the Constitution of the Federal Government dissolved by the acid of laylessness. Commie Dems are telling us “We don’t need no stinking Laws, we are above the law”.

Not since the aftermath of the Civil War has the Federal Government been so clearly outside the bounds of our written compact between We the People and the Federal Government.

We can’t sell out, collect our money and get the hell out of this Obama paradise!

Everything about the America I grew up in and loved has turned to evil. Decent people and ideas are ridiculed; homosexuals are not only pedestalized, but given preferential treatment in hiring by the lousy government.

Our legislators are, by and large, idiots who couldn’t get a job in the private sector (save in a law firm, perhaps) so they polish up their oratorial skills and get elected to a job that pays them for the rest of their worthless lives.

Get out? If we could.

I think of the Caymans where there’s no taxes on anything!

I agree with this. The likelihood of any serious secession movement is nil until things get much, much worse. And when it does happen, the Marxist government in place is going to be absolutely brutal in putting it down. I'm not sure many eyes will be opened even then.

So?...What underlies the evil? Answer: Generations of children who have been poorly reared in the light of the Lord.

1) Why should God save our nation when on Monday morning, MILLIONS of Christians and conservatives will send their children into the government school temples of godlessness and socialism? Merely by attending these precious children will learn to think godlessly. They must just to cooperate in the classroom! And...They risk learning that any voting mob powerful enough to give them tuition-free schooling is powerful enough to give them **lots** of “free” stuff.

2) Why should God save a nation when Christians and conservatives **willingly** send their children into our nation's morally CORRUPT colleges and universities. These universities are stuffed to the brim with persuasive Marxist and godless professors who eat the souls of naive students for breakfast.

3) Why should God save a nation when Christians by the MILLIONS watched the final show of American Idol where Lady Gaga simulated intercourse on stage? Where was the outrage? Why is this program still on the air? It is on the air because MILLIONS of Christians watch it.

4) Millions of Christians and conservatives show up for a chicken sandwich but can't figure out a peaceful and legal way to end abortion. Really?

Of the items above, at least with abortion the soul of the precious innocent flies directly to the arms of Jesus. With the rest, the child risks losing his precious soul. Which is worse?

No, Pat; we can’t. That’s because even if we did “dwell apart,” the fact remains that the federal Leviathan (composed primarily of the forces from which we would seek to dwell apart) maintains a stranglehold over the whole shebang; so that dwelling apart is rendered meaningless because the long arm of our oppressors would reach us still.

From what I can tell, most groups that form are fundamentally flawed,they appear to attract so many nuts.

They fail to setup viable structures that allow them to function similar to a 501C. President, Vice pres., Treasurer, Secretary, Sgt at arms, Legal and so forth. Set a code of conduct, background checks for all members seeking affiliation.

A few basic flaws that ultimately bring down groups, folks not being truthful regarding their past, folks not adhering to structure/code of conduct of the group (lone rangers), groups acting willy nilly w/o researching local, federal, state laws. Lotsa folks start talking nonsense during meetings, stuff that borders on sedition/conspiracy.

This sort of thing should be strictly forbidden and strictly enforced by any group.

The whole concept of militia has been demonized by the media to give a negative image. Hell, call it...America's gun club or whatever.

Fact is, like minded folks have the right to gather, discuss, research, practice as long as it stays within the law.
