NORMAN — Deisy Escalera considers Oklahoma her home.
She graduated from high school here, goes to college here and pays taxes here. But in some respects, Escalera isn't American — at least, not on paper. “I consider myself an American,” she said. “I was not born here, but I consider myself an American.”
Escalera, 23, came to the United States illegally from Mexico with her mother when she was 6 years old. Today, she's one of 25 undocumented students at the University of Oklahoma. Several of those undocumented students and their supporters gathered on OU's South Oval Tuesday evening to discuss the issues they face.
The vigil was organized by the Norman chapter of DREAM Act Oklahoma, an organization that seeks to put faces on the issue of illegal immigration. The group takes its name from a piece of proposed legislation that would grant legal status to undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children.
Although the DREAM Act hasn't been enacted, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a policy earlier this year that allows certain undocumented immigrants who were brought into the country as young children to stay in the country temporarily. The policy, known as Deferred Action, allows those immigrants to apply for two-year work permits that would let them stay in the country.

I think it’s time for Americans to hold a vigil for OUR laws that are constantly being violated by foreign nationals who come here and try to TELL US HOW IT’S GOING TO BE. Maybe she’s right in a way. Maybe she and her kind are the Americans now, and we who were born here or came legally, and are not entitled to all the welfare, benefits, affirmative action, free or in-state tuition rates, are something else. Because if she and her kind—the scofflaws, moochers, self-entitled— are Americans, I’m not.
Arrest these illegals, seize their property and deport them.
Cut them off at the pass, give them legal residency which means they retain their legal citizenship and cannot vote in US elections. Their status should be identified on their driver’s license or state id and one or the other should be required to register to vote and if your license or id is marked legal resident and citizen of elsewhere then you aren’t eligible to vote. And they pay taxes for the privilege of being allowed to stay here.
When I break the law, I’m punished to the full extend of it.
When they break the law, there is outrage and demands to change the law.

Exactly Ogen hal: If we know they are illegals so we can identify them to grant them reduced tuition as compared to American students, and if we can identify them to grant them driver’s licenses — they why the heii can’t we identify them to ship them back South after an appropriate time of incarceration as punishment for breaking our laws and and incentive for them not to risk it again? Their parents’ first act in America was ignoring our laws. How would someone from our country be treated by their country if we ignored theirs? Not going to happen. Both parties have their own vested interests in having them here.
I know-”conservative” means nothing anymore, just “rah-rah for the R”, and I am as guilty as the next for giving in to voting for Romney. I was willing to take the chance that his last stances were the ones he meant. But this latest crop aren’t even lying to us, they’re telling us plain out that they support rewarding lawbreakers at legal citizens’ expense. Well, that at least makes it easy for me to know that I don’t need to agonise over voting for them. It’s a clear “negative” on that. If we’re a one-party system now, I don’t need to even bother.
Objections to scenarios like this girl’s circumstance are going to go the way of an empty canoe sailing full ahead downward over the falls.
