Palau is Set to Get Lashed By A “One in A Million” Typhoon
Oceania TV ^ | 12/2/2012 (yeah, it's already Sunday there) | Kassi Berg

Posted on 12/01/2012 3:28:19 PM PST by dirtboy

The air that now blankets Palau is warm, dry, still, and disturbingly ominous. Palau’s sky has reason to brood for in less than 24 hours Typhoon Bopha is predicted to make landfall on the tiny nation of the Republic of Palau with a near direct hit. This typhoon has been securing strength and intensity while at sea and is expected to be a monster typhoon with a violent entry.

As of 4am on December 2, 2012, this typhoon is predicted to sustain 150-mph winds and 180-mph gusts when it reaches Palau on early morning Monday. If that were not enough, storm force winds extend out from the center to 120 miles and maximum wave height is now estimated at 48 feet.

Typhoon Bopha defies all parameters with intense rainfall, huge diameters and fierce, harnessed winds. Yet, what makes Typhoon Bopha a “typhoon in a million” is that it has developed five-degrees from the equator, an area which is covered by the “Coriolis force.” The Coriolis effect forces a counterclockwise rotation for all storms in the Northern Hemisphere (storms south of the equator rotate clockwise). According to Wikpedia, since records began, only thirteen tropical cyclones have ever existed between 5°N and 5°S of the equator.

Palau lies on the edge of the typhoon belt and has never seen a typhoon of this magnitude

Either that or at least be careful to not all go to one side of it and cause it to sink or capsize THAT way.

Also probably a function of they haven't been exposed to a major storm in their recent history. This really is a mutant kind of storm, forming so close to the equator, let alone being so intense.

A beast:

You can see Palau off to the WNW of the storm as a small yellow outline next to the number '81'.

As I recall, the Corolois Forces decreases as one approaches the Equator for horizontal velocities, but still remains for vertical velocities. Therefore, I don’t think Coriolis Force has anything to do with what is happening.IMHO

Yet, what makes Typhoon Bopha a “typhoon in a million” is that it has developed five-degrees from the equator, an area which is covered by the “Coriolis force.”

This statement is laughable for its ignorance. The Coriolis force is the force that tends to curve flows into a vortex, and is also the force that tends to force storms into a more north and easterly direction as they move north (in the Northern Hemisphere, of course). The Coriolis force is felt more strongly as one moves away from the equator either north or south until it diminishes again in the polar regions, and is essentially zero precisely at the equator, and weak either side of it, which is the reason cyclonic storms do not generally develop in the 10 degree band circling the Earth at its mid-section. It is the reason why there are many very tall palms where I live (about 8 degrees south) and not so many left on Guam (about 13 degrees north).

It would be inaccurate to say that the area 5 degrees north and south of the equator is NOT subject to the Coriolis force; it is, of course, as is everywhere else on Earth in principle.

The problem with the author's statement is that he leaves the absurdly inaccurate impression that the earth outside the equatorial band is NOT "covered" by the Coriolis force. Not only is it, but the Coriolis force is many times stronger there, which is the very reason for the greater incidence of cyclonic storms OUTSIDE the equatorial band.

"The gubermint relies heavily on financial assistance from the U.S."

What the fluke??????

Is this chain of fly specks in the ocean a U.S. Territory, a U.S. Protectorate, a U.S. colony, a U.S. airforce base.....or what!

What's with the financial assistance? Do the 21,000 souls vote Democrat by secret computers wired to Ohio?

What's the story here? How many tiny atolls around the planet are we subsidizing on the QT? Good grief.....!!!!

I hope the shelters are up to the task. I fear they are not:

Palau on 24-hour Notice of Arrival of Dangerous Typhoon

Posted on December 2, 2012 by Oceania TV News

It is 6pm in Palau and the National Emergency Management Office just signaled a fast wailing siren to alert the public that CONDITION 2 is in effect for the whole of the Republic.

CONDITION 2 is intended to provide notice that the typhoon will arrive within the next 24 hours. Travel by boat to any destination is now strictly prohibited. Condition 2 is also an alert that the public should go to the designated shelters in each State.

At the time of the warning announcement Typhoon Bopha was located approximately 480 miles east-southeast of Palau and was said to be moving at 12 miles per hour. The public was strongly advised to take this typhoon”very seriously.”

Condition 1 will be announced tomorrow with a mandatory island wide curfew at 6pm on Sunday, December 2, 2012.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, at this time, the Typhoon is predicted to reach a maximum waive height of 40 feet with sustained winds of 150mph and gusts of up to 173 mph. The Typhoon’s closest point of approach will be 13 miles from Koror and 4 miles from Anguar on Monday, December 2, 2012 at approximately 3 a.m.
