College Professors Get What They Asked For in Obamacare, Don't Like It Much

There is an antique saying -- no less true for its antiquity -- that you need to be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. This came to mind when I read a recent report about what is happening at a Pennsylvania college.

One of President Obama's most loyal -- not to say fawning -- constituencies clearly is academia. His rate of support among collegiate faculty and administrators surely approaches near-unanimity on the typical campus. This is why the news about the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is so richly ironic. CCAC has just announced that because of ObamaCare, it will have to slash the hours of 400 of its employees, about half of whom are adjunct instructors. This is because under new law, companies and other organizations employing 50 or more employees are required to provide full health care insurance (at high cost, because of a host of new mandates the law includes) for all employees working 30 or more hours a week. This means that employers have a tremendous incentive -- indeed, virtually a gun at their heads -- to either cut hours for employees to under 30 hours per week or eliminate workers outright (by outsourcing, offshoring, contracting out, and automating), or to keep the employees under 50 by simply not expanding.

This has led numerous private companies start taking precisely those actions -- including Abbot Labs, Applebee's, Boston Scientific, Covidien, Dana Holding, Darden Restaurants, Kinetic Concepts, Kroger, Lockheed-Martin, Medtronic, New Energy, Papa John's Pizza, Smith & Nephew, Stryker, TANCOA Janitorial, and Welch Allyn. For example, major restaurant chains such as Olive Garden and Red Lobster are already moving employees to under 30 hours a week. Boston Scientific has said that it will lay off 1,400 workers and shift production to China.

“This whole new part-time working situation will create a new market for people to probably working two jobs. Possibly restarant owners may trade some of their workers with other restaurants to avoid employ any one single employee more than 40 hours. It should be interesting to see how this works out?”

And welcome to work for cash-under-the-table, fewer IRS filers, black markets...

Academia will suck it up, they know it is the path to single payer health care, the plan all along.

From my experience, Academia will complain. Adjuncts live a subsidized, but poor life. Sucking it up is not their strong suit. Some of them will be converted to reality.

The tenured princes will be relatively unaffected, but will complain about the shortage of good help, that is, teaching assistants. For this, they will probably blame Global Warming.

I really don’t want my ancient language professor showing up to class in his McDonald’s uniform and apron. I don’t want to sit in my novel writing class taught by a woman who waxes bikini lines part time.

So these professors will work less hours, earn less pay, and still be required to buy obamacare insurance, at a higher premium because they cannot buy at the group rate their employer had before?

Bush’s fault.

That's old think. New think is that it's all Congress's fault, in league with those evil capitalists.

Just nitpicking:

I remember reading in other articles that the threshold for the number of full-time employees was 30, not 50; and that the demarcation between “part-time” and “full-time” is 28 hours per week, not 30.

In other words, to avoid Obamacare, a business can employee up to 30 employees who work over 28 hours per week; but employees #31, 32, 33, etc., must work no more than 28 hours.

In any case, I expect unemployment to roughly double in about a year.

Also, I’ve just read on NewsMax that HHS, which administers Obamacare, will impose a 3.5% tax per Obamacare insurance policy in those states that have rejected setting up their own HIX (health insurance exchanges) opting instead for the “default” position of the law that allows the federal government to set up its own exchange.

Wait until these people who get their hours reduced are forced to pay for their health insurance.

Be careful what you wish for.

Prescription drug benefit? $400 billion a year?

Yea it really was partly Bush’s fault in that he pushed us down that socialized medicine road instead of defending the pharmaceuticals and the free market to lower prices.

Lets face it, Bush was no genius in conservative theory. Yea he was worlds better than those he ran against, but he did us no real favors. Bush was McCain lite, and Romney would probably be close behind.

It is again a lesson on voting/choosing the lesser of two evils, instead of the best choice. Like Ron Paul. The left goes harder and harder left,,, while the right compromises and tries to get along, resulting in the government moving more and more socialist.

We are losing ground..

The Marxist Revolution - this is how it begins.

Odd - the United States spent countless millions of dollars and the lives of so many of its heroes to combat communism in Europe, Asia, and around the world, and... now we’ve voted it into office without so much as a murmur of protest.

Live long enough, see everything.
