Brit Hume just tweeted the same thing.
Here’s the whole quote:
“Well you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective.
Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf life. Since we will inevitably learn about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games.
Please. Those that need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportions about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City based writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well, that we may as well just quote, or paraphrase, from the end of his article:
Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.
In the coming days, Jovan Belchers actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe: if Jovan Belcher didnt possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.
The second half is next.”
- Bob Costas, 12/2/12 halftime commentary Cowboys/Eagles game, Sunday Night Football, NBC.
The late 1960s were rough for gun owners, and the 1970s were worse, Almost every cop show on TV managed to write in an anti-gun message.
Richard Boone as Heck Ramsey had an anti-gun segment,
All in the family,
Dennis Weaver in McCloud, and way too many others all managed to incorperate an anti-gun message.
Even documentaries like SAY GOODBY and THE GUNS OF AUGUST ripped up gun owners real bad.
TV movies were real bad at that time. Mike Connors in REVENGE FOR A RAPE was one. It badmouthed gun ownership, hunting, and personal vengeance, all in one.
You have that right Old. I haven’t payed much attention to the NFL since Bart Starr, Paul Hornung and Jimmy Taylor retired. Now there were some football players!
ERROR! ERROR! That should be GUNS OF AUTUMN, not AUGUST!
For Sunday Night Football to take this measure is very stupid. They blame the method vs the reason. They are clearly trying to reflect any damage or lifestyle the sport is responsible for.
Bob Costas can suck ass. He knows better.
They cannot secure their New World Order here in Amerika without first getting all of our firearms.
NBC is getting absolutely hammered on twitter. I find the photos of the people making comments to be rather enlightening too. A number of them have been (and probably still are, LOL) Black.
I love football but this network can go to Hell.
Costas (NBC) was quoting an article by Jason Whitlock written for Fox Sports.
Both NBC and Fox Sports were responsible for your halftime indoctrination.
I like that movie.
So let’s say that Belcher does not have a gun. He simply goes into the kitchen, gets a knife, and stabs the woman to death. Thes f’n liberals are nuts !!!!
You have “steroids” in you right now.
That’s what I TOLD NBC in my note...she’d likely be alive if SHE HAD A GUN!!!
Typical liberal...society’s fault. I can’t stand these people using their media position to promote their politics.
Shows how ignorant he is though...I didn’t know that before this statement.
The NFL message board is also fairly un-moderated as well so I’ve posted some reminders about Bob’s good friend OJ and his method of execution.
Just imagine of bathtubs were banned..Andrea Yates kids would still be alive
The one glorified by Hip-Hop?
The same one putting billions into the pockets of Hollywood?
Not to mention the Democrat Party's role in eliminating the father from the black family.
But let's not talk about any of that...the NRA is Satan
Costas mentions the “Glorified gun culture” yet the media kisses the ass of Chris Brown who beat Rihanna within an inch of her life and last week he went on a twitter rant against some comedian with tweets that even made ME blush..not a peep from the press..but mention guns, yeah guns are bad, but a rapper who beats his girlfriend, isn’t that just awesome..lets give him an award
I just complained to the FCC about Costas and NBC. It won’t do any good, but I feel a lot better letting them know I have had it with the commie crap that passes for broadcast entertainment.
That was the face of fascism propagandizing to us tonight.
The kenyan will take the ball and run with it next week. This is all nicely set up for a classic obama shuck and jive distraction play. He needs something while he runs out the clock on the fiscal cliff. Here it is.
Basically, Bob Costas used part of NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast to promote anti-RKBA propaganda by blaming the "gun culture" for the murder-suicide by that Chiefs' player. Liberals have no shame.
“The Long, Long Trailer” is one of my favorite movies. My parents drove us “out west” in the late 60s in a huge yellow Cadillac. I remember some of those roads!
And glorifying Bill Clinton and his sexual abusing past!!!
If the Pubbies had any eggs...they'd have had Billy Jeff de-nutted politically years ago....
Should we blame the deaths caused by drunk drivers on cars? I think the problem is media people like Bob Costas who encourage a culture of victimism, narcissism and hedonism.
Can’t even tell you what my sons have been calling Costas for years. Not polite. ;-) He is definitely a jerk. I imagine Mr. Costas lives in a secure gated community and may even have private ARMED bodyguards or a driver. Liberals are such hypocrites.
I joined this site just now because of the POS NBC! I’ve never “blogged” before, or whatever you call this. I’m just so damn tired of idiots like costas blaming an inanimate object, a gun, instead of the “person” pulling the trigger. It’s just mindless babble while attempting to appear relevent! He should just refrain from breathing to help stop “man caused global warming”!
The racist Bob Costas believes black people are too dumb to figure out how to kill someone without a gun.
Welcome to FR!
...but Bobby feels better now, and that’s all that matters. /s
I blame football. He probably had brain damage. Costas and all sportscasters are complicit.
Costas-the-metrosexual doesn’t spend his money on guns. He spends it on cosmetic surgery and botox.
Eat it Bob.
Its refreshing to see an actress like Lucille Ball in her younger years, so much a real woman. Sigh, she would have been my number one pinup gal.
As you're making your list, and checking it twice, don't forget to add Comcast, the owner of NBC/MSNBC.
I dumped Comcast last week. Good riddance.
Nothing to do with NBC or guns, but I’m pretty sure I saw a PSA on Hallmark promoting tolerance of homosexual kids. It surprised me so much that I kept an eye out for it to appear again, but didn’t see it again. Very disturbing.
As I saw another FReeper on a different thread post:
“Perhaps Costas would have felt better if he run her over with a car instead”.....Costas is a lunatic.
most sportswriters are.these hypocrites don't mind publicly funded stadiums to supoprt their Livelihood, knowing full well football shortens the life of the players and has the risk of possible death just to entertain people and insure the NFL sportscasters make their overpaid salaries.
ESPN has been overcome by leftist-propaganda. It would be nice to go to a sports site for SPORTS! and not leftist-govt approved misinformation. Either they should have a good ‘equal-time’ retort published or have Whitlock fired.
I’ll bet he has no problems with armed security wherever he goes though. Freaking hypocrites.
