Up to two million people are to have their credit files secretly checked under a crackdown on tax evasion to be unveiled by George Osborne to help raise another £10 billion.
Credit reference agencies will cross-check details of the income people declare on their tax returns against their spending patterns to identify high and medium risks of both illegal and legal tax avoidance.
People identified to HM Revenue and Customs will then be subject to more detailed investigations. About two million people are expected to be scrutinised under the programme, which may lead to privacy concerns.
HMRC will today unveil the successful results of a pilot programme involving about 20,000 people which will now be extended nationally.
Many of those who are expected to be identified are likely to be self-employed workers who have under-declared their income to the authorities.
However, those who have benefited from secret windfalls such as an inheritance or a bonus and people with secret offshore accounts could also be highlighted.

Coming to a totalitarian state near you. Very near.
I’m amazed Husein hasn’t instructed his IRS gnomes to do this over here. I’m sure it’s part of his “tax plan”.
and you know they are not doing this now how?? Ya see, our tax system relies upon “voluntary” compliance. So, if you volunteer to give yourself a few hundered tax refunds, that is OK but if you don’t volunteer your actual income amount, they go to great lengths to force you to volunteer. So, where a paper or electronic trail exists somewhere, I would not for a second dismiss the concept of them tracking consumer credit card spending.
Already here in the US.
I have talked to IT consultants who worked on a top-secret project for the NY State Dept. of Revenue. It uses data mining techniques to identify online purchases of NY residents (as well as those made at out-of-state malls) to go after them for the sales tax.
The guys who worked on this project called it (and I am quoting verbatim)...”Eliot Spitzer’s Wet Dream”.
Dave Ramsey is right again. Don’t use credit cards. Cash is the only way to do business when the government is monitoring credit card traffic.
Illinois has been doing it for several years too. If you buy your smokes or booze in Missouri to avoid onerous Illinois taxes, be sure to pay in cash, because Illinois will send you a bill otherwise. The shame is that Visa, Master Card, etc. cooperates with the tax goons.
I thought this was a given already....
Nothing to fear, citizens.
I propose a civilian hitman network to deal with overzealous IRS agents...lol
Cash is King.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
(lol, love that quote)
Yeah, riiiight. If they were interested in illegal tax avoidance, they'd crosscheck a couple of million bottom feeders as well. But it looks like they're just going after the "1%" -- well, maybe 10% -- only scrutinizing small businessmen, the wealthy, and children who inherited what, in their envious and covetous estimation, is "too much" money. Big time dope dealers skate.
If they get too cute here, the taxmen will get lead instead of silver and gold.
