Hurricane Sandy was swirling northward, four days before landfall, and at the Sea Crest Health Care Center, a nursing home overlooking the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, workers were gathering medicines and other supplies as they prepared to evacuate.
Then the call came from health officials: Mayor....Bloomberg,acting on the advice of his aides and those of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, recommended that nursing homes and adult homes stay put. The 305 residents would ride out the storm.
The same advisory also took administrators by surprise at the Ocean Promenade nursing home, which faces the Atlantic Ocean in Queens. They canceled plans to move 105 residents to safety.
No one gets why we werent evacuated, said a worker there... We wouldnt have exposed ourselves to dealing with that situation.
The recommendation that thousands of elderly, disabled and mentally ill residents remain in more than 40 nursing homes and adult homes in flood-prone areas of New York City had calamitous consequences.
At least 29 facilities in Queens and Brooklyn were severely flooded. Generators failed or were absent. Buildings were plunged into a cold wet darkness, with no access to power, water, heat and food.
While no immediate deaths were reported,it took at least three days for the Fire Department, the National Guard and ambulance crews from around the country to rescue over 4,000 nursing home and 1,500 adult home residents. Without working elevators, many had to be carried down slippery stairwells.
I was shocked, said Greg Levow, who works for an ambulance service and helped rescue residents...I couldnt understand why they were there in the first place. ................
.....Mr. Bloomberg, relying on the advice of the city and state health commissioners, had already determined that people in nursing homes and adult homes should not leave, officials said.
The mayors recommendations that health care facilities not evacuate startled residents of Surf Manor adult home in Coney Island,....What about us! Whys he telling us to stay?......

Happened with katrina too. I bet it was horrific for the residents.
Oh, but they cared.
A full read of this article is damning for those calling the shots.
What about us! Whys he telling us to stay?......
...because to liberals, you’re old and worthless. Please try to learn something about Dems you old coot! Whine and vote democrat. That’s what most people do.
I’ve commented often on the lack of commonsense that exists with Liberals. They haven’t any.
IMO this proves my point.
It should be criminal to have Liberals in charge of anything to do with Economics, health, and safety of others be they human, or otherwise.
We should have our representatives draw up a bill in the House.
Any questions about INTENT?
Just one more "STAND DOWN" order, any problems with that?/s
Attempted “Death Panels” in keeping with soetoro Care.
And yet, we’ll never hear about how Cuomo, or more importantly, Obama, blew this. Katrina was completely Bush’s fault and Obama gets a free pass for Sandy.
I’m going to NJ this weekend to hand out coats and blankets...I’m curious to see what the locals think about the situation and I plan to query them a bit. I don’t want my trip there to be about that, but if I hear anything, I’ll be sure to ask follow-up questions.
Part of it was the cost of Irene’s state mandated evacuations (those payments are still outstanding).
They gambled and now are saying they never said not to evacuate.
Their intent was to save lives.
Just exactly WHERE would you send hundreds of octogenarian refugees to at the onset of a hurricane?
Nobody died. But if these oldsters were forced out?
You can bet there would have been fatalities.
Yeah, but they really cared.
James Bond: Do you expect me to talk?
Auric Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die.
Well DUH, I don't know, say about a week or two......, but the potential of another Katrina nursing home disaster should have given them some motive to think quicker.
No one died, hmmmmmmm, just a fluke conseqence. With Gov't entity in bankruptcy, one way to relieve the pain is taking advantage on an opportunity.
So there was NO WHERE they could have been moved?? really?
Nobody died...that is the good thing, but what IF they all died as happened in KATRINA? But, then the Gov't would not be held criminially responsible in that case.
Old people are expendable and the quicker the better/sarcasm.
had they died, that close to the election, you can be sure there was a PR plan in place to somehow fully put the blame on .....ROMNEY!
Yeah...they cared enough to get these people to fill out absentee ballots. I’m finding it hard nowdays to give a crap what happens up north in the wake of the pre-election, much-hyped “Sandy”. Go ask Obama for help.
They probably relied on forecasts from the GeronL Weather Center...
Common theme, don’t vote for a Democratic mayor or gov...
you should be zotted
Making fun of the over-the-top media coverage means I don’t care now does it?
I wasn’t even on this thread and got personally attacked
If they are not you and yours tell them to go ask Obama or Christie for the handout. That's what they voted for.
