House GOP makes a $2.2 trillion debt counteroffer to Obama on cliff

House Republican leaders have made a counteroffer to President Obama in the fiscal cliff negotiations, proposing to cut $2.2 trillion with a combination of spending cuts, entitlement reforms and $800 billion in new tax revenue.

The leaders delivered the offer to the White House on Monday with a three-page letter signed by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and four other senior Republicans, including Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the party’s just-defeated vice presidential nominee.

FYI to ALL:

These are all 10 year plans!

The whole debate is a joke. Whether the debt is "reduced" by $1.6 T or $2.2 T, it is over a 10 year period, meaning NOTHING will be done because the American Attention Span doesn't last more than a few weeks! The bigger issue here is the increase in the Debt Ceiling and on that measure, I say to Speaker Boehner - DON'T RAISE THE DEBT CEILING!

Not trying to cause any harm, but anyone who is cheering on the GOP to capitulate 2 years before an election, should just stop commenting all together. There are already going to be plenty of squishes all over the GOP media who get paid while cheering on the GOP to do everything they can to appear electable while becoming completely unelectable sellouts. What Boehner just put forth is the best case scenario, the final deal will be worse than this and the GOP really is about to be an extinct party.

“counteroffer”??
Don’t you first have to have a serious “offer” to “counter”?

Hmmm...I never said anything utilizing that phony 47% figure. I said “half,” as a rhetorical device representing “a whole heckuva lot.”

People expect me to be so literal.

My point was more towards lobbyists bribing both sides of the aisle almost equally. THAT was my important point.

It will suck but the blame will go with the plan, which will be his.

No it won't. When you have a statistic coming out that a majority of voters STILL blame Bush for the economy, the blame will once again go to the GOP. It is very sad that we have so many Ill-Informed Voters in this country.

People who can't understand the advanced play strategy need to look at how they took Roe v. Wade from legal abortions to teenagers having fetus murder arranged at school without parental notification.

Or, bilingual ed creating a generation of latino students who were matriculated through school without learning enough English to become upwardly mobile Americans.

Then there's the more recent examples of gay rights progressing to gay marriage and already to the discussions of multiple legal parents in California.

...marijuana has gone from medical prescriptions to legal possession in WA and OR. That one I kind of like because possession and sales is still a Federal crime and this is a states rights issue that will maybe go to the Supremes. If they find for the states, then conservative activists have an open door on many issues where the feds have overstepped authority.

WALK AWAY!

There is a big problem with this strategy. If the republcians walk away, Obama gets:

1: a huge tax increase on rich, poor and middle class (more money to spend

2: Huge defense cuts

3: no entitlement cuts

4: the ability to blame republicans for any damage because they wouldn't make a deal.

Republicans backed themselves into this, and can't just walk away.

Don’t forget to divide all those numbers by 10 as is always the case when congress talks numbers. It is over a ten year period. So even if these numbers were obtained, which won’t happen. Well we only have a 200 billion cut per year on a 1.2(or more) yearly deficit. Not exactly going to save the day. For that and other reasons This whole thing is a fraud.

It’s pretty sorry when the GOP’s opening bid is less than 2-to-1 spending cuts to tax increase, chipping only 20% off the $1 trillion-plus annual deficit.

I agree. Give him everything he wants except control of the debt ceiling. Make him and the rats own it ALL. Let them take the blame in the aftermath of the fallout of yet another failed economic policy. I want to see every Obama voter suffer the consequences of their votes. It’s called revenge.

“If the Reps should do such a stupid thing, then it will be the end of the GOP. We need a third party to stand on principle.”

We need a second party.

if any of you can follow exactly what House Rs offered please ping me with it.

smoke and mirrors ??? kabuki ??? handicap cage match, with mr mcmahon as the guest referee ???

oh you meant something more tangible than...

Republican officials said their 10-year plan contained more deficit reduction than the offer the White House presented last week while standing firm against Obama’s demand to increase tax rates on the wealthy.

another soviet '10 yr plan to fix the last 100 yrs worth of 10 yr plans...

the 'R' offer seems to be handing bambam another weapon to beat themselves sensless...
