NEW HAVEN -- State prosecutors have dismissed charges against a prominent New Haven lawyer who was arrested in August after bringing a handgun to a city movie theater showing the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Sung-Ho Hwang, 46, an immigration attorney and president of the New Haven County Bar Association, was charged with breach of peace and interfering with police after officers said they found a loaded handgun in his waistband.

The arrest came not long after a gunman opened fire during a screening of the same film in Aurora, Colo., in July, killing 12 moviegoers and wounding 58.

Hugh Keefe, Hwang's attorney, said prosecutor David Strollo agreed to drop the misdemeanor charges Monday. Strollo cited Hwang's clean record and that although police were yelling to put his hands up, Hwang didn't know they were police because of the flash lights in his eyes, Keefe said.

"He thought it was a prank and once he realized they were police he complied," Keefe said.

Keefe said after Strollo said he would drop the charges, he requested they be dismissed and a judge agreed.

What if you were not the head of the Bar Association? Still, a good outcome. The police should be disciplined.

I would never go willingly to anyplace where my personal weapons were not allowed...nor will I be loyal to a government who would outlaw them.

And how much time, money, and psychological abuse is this guy out as a result of the idiocy of the police and the prosecutor?

This guy should sue those cretins for everything they’ve got.

...which brings up another sore subject with me: the cops ace when you’ve done nothing wrong. It’s either disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace or some other really lame charge with no boundaries. These wildcard laws need to be purged from the books or defined with VERY specific terms.

From the article:
“ Officers said Hwang was laughing and continued to use his cell phone when they questioend him.

Police said Hwang had a permit to carry the weapon but didn’t comply with their commands, leading to the arrest.”

Clear case of refusal to abjectly cower before the StatPoleitzi Ubermenschen. Not being a craven Cop Sucker can have consequences.

Hopefully, being an “Armed & Dangerous” LEO will prove to be expensive to the abusive cop - if and only if the lawyer sues.

Charged with"failure to comply". Everything else in order.

These sorry-a$$ cops can kiss mine.

Failure to comply applies both ways. The cops should be charged with failure to comply with laws on this subject from the Constitution on down to the city level.

They should surrender their weapons upon demand by a citizen.

"Failure to comply". Sheesh!

>>Strollo cited Hwang’s clean record

Translation (for the civil suit): we were right. He was guilty but we let him off because we are such nice guys.
