MATLACHA, FL -
Gunfire on Matlacha shook the typically quiet coastal community Monday morning when a bait shop owner let off shots in what he says was self defense.
As Joe Miceli readied his Matlacha restaurant Monday morning around 10:00 a.m., bullets flew next door to him at D & D Bait Shop.
"Just two gunshots," said Miceli, Restaurant Owner.
The bait shop owner told us -- off camera -- crooks tried robbing the business off Pine Island -- a shock to long time customers.
"It's a small town out there," said customer Kyle Clement.
Clement didn't realize why Lee County deputies were at the tackle favorite until he spoke to those inside.
"Guy went in there, tried to rob the place. The owner basically chased after him, made a couple shots," Clement said.
Deputies say the evidence isn't there to consider the altercation an attempted robbery.
They say the owner encountered a heated dispute over money between an employee and another man.
Investigators say the owner felt threatened, and under Florida law, won't face charges for firing his weapon -- even though no one else showed force.
"Someone gets into a business, there to rob the place. I'd do the same thing," Clement said.
After the owner opened fire, deputies say the men who started the argument drove off.
Deputies want to question the men to ensure things don't escalate into gunfire again.
"Hope it doesn't happen again, hope they don't come back. Hope they stay safe," Clement said.
Says it all.
