Dick Armey quits FreedomWorks
wapo ^ | 12/3/12 | Rachel Weiner

Posted on 12/03/2012 7:45:29 PM PST by Nachum

Former congressman Dick Armey has quit FreedomWorks, the conservative group he helped bring to national tea party prominence.

Armey confirms that he wrote a letter to FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe on Nov. 30, resigning from the group, as first reported by Mother Jones. He told the Post that he does not know who leaked his resignation letter.

“We accepted his letter of resignation and we wish him well,” FreedomWorks press secretary Jackie Bodnar said.

“As I resign from all board positions and duties, please see below a list of dispositions on outstanding issues: I expect to be fully compensated through the expiration date (December 31, 2012) of my current consulting contract with FreedomWorks,” he wrote. “Henceforth FreedomWorks shall be prohibited from using my name, image, or signature in any way or for any purpose without my written permission or in the event of my death, without my heirs written permission.”

Although that may all be standard legalese, that does not sound like a particularly friendly parting. I suppose we will hear more later on.

Is he resigning effective immediately, but demanding to be paid for the rest of his self created Christmas vacation?

It’s only a few weeks. Many people have that much vacation saved up by the end of the year.

I never did quite get what Armey's deal is. He quit Congress rather abruptly as well.

I didn’t like the way Armey dissed JD Hayworth and Newt. Armey’s establishment.

Might be interesting, eventually learning the source of contention that led to Armey’s departure. Used to regard him as an okay conservative back in the day, but when he became vocally pro-amnesty, I grew very wary of him. That’s the reason I kept my distance from FreedomWorks, quite frankly. Plus, when the tea party movement started, he did come across rather presumptiously like a guy who ran out in front of an ongoing parade and immediately proclaimed himself the “big leader,” as if he were some kind of populist outsider. Which considering his background was hard to buy, to put it mildly.

Sounds like the joint was infiltrated. Thus, the resignation. Who would speed release a personal resignation letter, for whom one should retain some right to privacy in personnel matters, such as conditions of hiring and firing and resigning. This seems to have from the post office to the hands of the Washington Post?

Wow. Barrier breaking speed there. I’d be burned about that, but lately I’m burned most of the time with the stupid party politics in general.

>> I never did quite get what Armey’s deal is <<

Seems to be a really sleazy character, going back at least to the time about 15 years ago when he was spreading scurrilous rumors about the tragic suicide of Brit Hume’s son. There also seems to have been very bad blood between Armey and Tom Delay.

Yes, somewhere, Armey got a burr and became crossways with most everyone, at one time or another, on our side. I don’t quite know what the deal was, but he was sidelined for some reason.

I wasn’t aware of that but it sounds typical. I’ll add it to my list of Armey misdeeds.

He has been in line to succeed to The Speakership when Gingrich stepped down, but Armey lost out because he had made so many enemies in the GOP. Doesn’t really seem to be ideological issues so much as personality clashes.

I think the tea party is more effective when it doesn’t have “leaders”. No one in particular for the MSM to attack. When they attacked us as a group, it didn’t stick. When they attack these so-called tea party leader groups (e.g. tea party patriots and tea party express) the MSM got more traction. Also, I remember a lot of the conservative middle and conservative Reagan democrats participating in tea party rallies.

Yes, thanks. I believe too that personality differences superceded ideological differences. I loved Newt back then, and afterward on many issues. Sorry to see him occasionally try out the make-nice outreaches withe Lefties.

He came to our town to campaign for Dave Weldon, several years ago.

JC Watts came with him. Interesting the news is now about both of them making moves...I am wondering if something is happening on a Party reorganization level?

He was never even mentioned at any Freedom Works Session this summer and fall. FW teamed with Glenn Beck this year.

Armey was very active in Tax restructure...Fair or Flat? Maybe he did not get the backing he wanted. He seems to be easily angered or is it he angers others?

Yep that is how it was.

He was very quick to jump on the band wagon and start raking in the dough from those he attracted to his org.

FW has always been quite aggressive in trying to attract money.

The Tea Party Patriots were driven by monetary greed soon after they saw how fast the TPM was growing.

And took a lot of manipulative actions to attract money and also to be seen as the "leader" of the Tea Party Movement.

A lot of infighting also.

Both of those groups were/are more interested in promoting themselves rather than spending more energy on pushing the Tea Party principles etc.

Yes a number of times, here is just a sample.....

Armey also suggested that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not his ideal candidate in 2012. “There’s nobody from Alaska on my list,” he said.

Just one of many he made, said she was old news in another, just very unflattering dismissive remarks

From related articles...

“The top management team of FreedomWorks was taking a direction I thought was unproductive, and I thought it was time to move on with my life,” Armey tells Mother Jones. “At this point, I don’t want to get into the details. I just want to go on with my life.”

In the email, Armey indicated that he wants nothing to do with FreedomWorks anymore.

He'll receive an $8M payout...The person behind the payout is Richard J. Stephenson, a prominent fundraiser and founder and chairman of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a national cancer treatment network.

My earlier post on this thread noted that Freedom Works's main objective was/is to raise money off of the backs of Conservatives and Tea Party Movement people.

They have been quite successful as they had 8 Mil sitting around to give to Armey. Har, Tea Party guy my foot, look at that golden parachute!

The wording (in the article I read) was unclear whether Freedom Works paid the $$, or this guy Stephenson did. I read somewhere else, today, that Armey signed a consulting contract with someone named Stephenson. Not sure if it’s related. Maybe it was a way to make everyone play nice. Again, not sure.

I checked it out and it is Stephenson who will be paying Armey.

He’s on the board.

$400,000 a year installments.

All of that in the contract entered into at the end of Sept.

Well the money comes from a guy that owns cancer treatment centers who is on the board of FW.

He’s a friend of Armey.

He is going to pay the 8 mil.

This is probably the death knell for Freedom Works, who imo was in it for the money and glory (as supposed tea party “leaders.”)
