The Who's Pete Townshend: 'I'm a Bit of a Neocon'

The Who's Pete Townshend: 'I'm a Bit of a Neocon' By Noel Sheppard Created 12/04/2012 - 9:33am

Most rock musicians are typically quite liberal.

Apparently not legendary Who guitarist Pete Townshend who dropped a political bombshell Tuesday saying, "I'm a bit of a neocon" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

During a six-minute interview with ABC's Jonathan Karl for the joint online program "Spinners and Winners" launched in January by ABC and Yahoo! News, Townshend said he thought Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was going to win the election earlier this month.

"I thought he was throwing the money in such buckets," Townshend said. "And I thought Obama looked tired--because the hurricane must have come like a sock in the chops. I mean, the actual detail of having to deal with all of that stuff in the middle of a campaign."

"I try to stay away from American politics, I'm a bit of a neocon,' he surprisingly continued. "I like the idea of America as the world’s police force, and then we don’t have to do it."

"When we first started in 1967," Townshend elaborated, "a lot of our buddies were acid-heads who were trying to escape the draft. I felt denied the right in a sense to have a role in the future of the world as a soldier, as a mover, a shaker. When I found music, and I found a new way to speak and to express myself particularly to those young teenagers that we entertained when we started out, that became my politics."

As for the Who's anthem "Won’t Get Fooled Again,” Townshend said it's "an anti-politics song."

"I like the idea of America as the world’s police force, and then we don’t have to do it."

I think most neocons want their own country to become more aggressively involved in the world. Wanting other countries to do the job sounds more isolationist to me.

BTW, I posted this last night but since we are talking classic rock and politics:

First time in years I have seen Letterman. He started off by saying “Republicans tried to block my award.”
Then he said he met Obama, from what I recall: “Radiant, tall, never better looking, strong, well-rested, what you want from a President. My knees buckled meeting him.”

Chris Matthews has company.

I liked that snippet of film from Woodstock where Townshend shoves Abbie Hoffman off the stage...

Without even knowing his politics I always liked Pete the best. Now he’s assumed an even greater status. Funny how I cannot find a clue to his rightward leanings in his songwriting, which has always been very personal in nature. But Tommy can be viewed as a libertarian treatise.

""I like the idea of America as the world’s police force, and then we don’t have to do it." "

The only thing The World would hate more than The USA being in charge would be The USA NOT being in charge.

I’m pretty sure Pete Townshend would be quick to add “don’t count on me for political insight”. As opposed to pompous pretend political savants like Bruce Springsteen.

I think most neocons want their own country to become more aggressively involved in the world. Wanting other countries to do the job sounds more isolationist to me.

Wanting one's own country to be more aggressively involved in the world sounds more like imperialism.

I guess neocons want the world to be policed, and if somebody else is willing to do that for them, so much the better.

We aren't hostile to Britain or its interests, and they usually participate in what we do, giving them a role in the world at little cost to themselves.

The original mod culture that was the incubator for The Who was decidedly anti-hippy but pro-US and pro-market.

There are plenty of contemporary and subsequent descriptions of the mods that lament their obsession with making money, with looking good and with American and Italian culture.

There was a major article from early on (about 1962/1963) that is often cited where a number of mods were interviewed.

The interviewees were teens living in London from blue collar families who often worked multiple jobs and went dancing every night in clubs that played American soul and jazz records. They dressed to the nines and preferred caffs to pubs. The journalist seemed amazed by statementa from many of them that they preferred the Conservatives to Labour.

What was his excuse again?

That’s right.

He was “downloading child porn” to “get it off the internet.”

That’s right...he claims he believed that every picture he downloaded “removed” it from the internet.

And then after he had “removed” enough child porn by saving it to his hard drive, he was going to call the cops.

And people just lap it up. The guy is still touring. And now he’s a neocon...just lol.
