A California family that has operated an oyster farm on the bucolic Northern California coast is fighting back after the federal government moved to kick it off of the National Park Service property where the shellfish have been legally harvested for nearly 80 years.
The Drakes Bay Oyster Company faces closure and its 30 employees will be out of work if the National Park Service reclaims some 1,100 acres of an estuary as part of a plan to create a larger marine wilderness preserve at Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. Owner Kevin Lunny said federal officials told him on Thursday one day before his company's 40-year lease was set to expire that he had three months to clear out. On Tuesday, he announced he's suing.
"We're not going to walk away," Lunny told reporters during a conference call. "We're fighting for our community."
Lunny said the company currently has roughly 10 million immature oysters worth up to $5 million awaiting harvest.

UN Agenda 21 at work to implement plank #1 of the Communist Manifesto.
The sold it to the Feds to deliberately keep it from being developed. Of course, it was fine that they should live and work there, but in their mind, nobody else should ever have that same pleasure.
So they made a deal with the devil.
Before i get too worked up about them, i want to know if they are registered democrats, or turn up on any Obama donor lists.
The video is chilling. Junk science and environmental zealots.
Obama is CaLIFS. MAIN SHUCKER....
Guess these guys shouldn’t have voted for Obama.....
That’s my thinking too. I’ll be amazed if they are not Obama supporters. If they are, then this is justice. I didn’t see a lot of Bay Area outrage when the central valley farms of California were devastated by cutting off their water.
What goes around, comes around. And it was their boy Obama doing it.
Of course they are all democrats, they just never thought it would come back and bite their ass..
Voting has consequences.
Wander what’s gonna happen to the crop. Be a shame if those oysters were just left to turn to mudders.
The vietnamese will snatch ‘em up quick!
I think the government should have top do an environmental impact study. The oysters probably help maintain a cleaner estuary. An environmental impact study should delay things for a good 30-40 years.
LOL, no need to snatch ‘em, they’re kinda slow. :)
I used to live on Pt Reyes and I can tell you that there were a variety of folk out there. Some of them were total liberal loonies but a lot of them, especially people who had run a business for a long time, were quite conservative.
I loved the oyster farm and used to go out there all the time. It was a big feature of Pt Reyes, and I can’t believe that the NPS or anybody else wants to shut it down. When Pt Reyes became a national seashore, businesses got long leases because they were considered an asset to the area. I guess that’s not true in the New Obama Nation.
It’s all Obama, all the time.
In the present political climate of mob rule (or parasite rule, take your pick) it is amazing that the rule of law shows a spark of life...
All may not be lost just yet.
