As NATO in Brussels gave the go-ahead Tuesday night, Dec. 4, for the deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missiles to protect Turkey against Syrian missiles, DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources reported that convoys of the Syrian army’s chemical weapons units headed out of Damascus under cover of dark and turned north up the road to Aleppo. Their destination is not yet known.
The convoys were ferrying self-propelled cannons for firing shells loaded with poisonous sarin gas. Syrian President Bashar Assad had evidently decided to ignore the warnings President Barack Obama issued Monday night that there would be consequences if he or anyone in Syria resorted to chemical warfare and each would be held accountable.
Our sources report that the Syrian ruler is aparently gambling dangerously on the Americans holding back from attacking the convoys as long as they deploy unconventional weapons, and would only react when they are used.
He is also taking advantage of the heavy winds, rain and cloud over this part of the eastern Mediterranean and counting on the weather to obstruct military operations against his chemical weapons units.
By the time the weather clears some time Thursday, the units will be in place in battle formation. Meanwhile, bombing the convoys in windy weather could cause the deadly gas to spread out of control in unpredictable directions.
Israel Defense Forces’ Northern Command as saying: “The coming hours and days are extremely critical for Syria. The situation on our northern front could blow up any moment.” They did not elaborate.

I never realized that gas shells were fired from special cannons. All the normal arty is 155mm, but the gas shells are all special 160mm shells that only work in special chemical cannons!/ How stupid. Tubes are tubes. If SP155 is driving down the road, it’s no more dedicated to gas than it is to any other round in their inventory.
And why should a single Marine fight there? Even if they shoot gas at each other. If Assad wins, we have Assad. If the rebels win, we get another wahabbi extremist like Morsi. Who freakin’ cares?
And actually, Assad is nominally better for the local christians.

Special self propelled artillery that is only useful for sarin filled gas shells, and they are moving under cloud cover so we can’t see them!

If the Syrians decide to have a war with Turkey. They would obviously begin by taking out the Patriot Batteries with Sarin Gas artillery. That would open a corridor they could lob Ballistic missiles through and onto Turkish Cities. Russian Armor is all set to go up in the former Georgia provinces. They certainly do not have to reinforce Iran now.
Because there are many innocents involved. It is not a good situation.

Just because someone innocent is suffering, does not mean it is in any way our interest to join in. By that standard there is not a single war on earth that we should not be fighting in. ALL have innocents suffering.
But lets do it your way. Ok, innocents are suffering. So which side do we join on with? Assad? Not a great guy, but things werent too bad in Syria until the Wahabbists started trying to overthrow him.
Or do we join in with the rebels so they can install another Muslim Brotherhood dictator to decree sharia is the law, and maybe crucify a few christians like in Egypt?

No, the suffering of innocents is no justification to waste American troops. THAT causes American families to suffer. After all, those families are innocent too.

This is just smoke & mirrors to distract from domestic problems, just as Argentina invaded the Falklands/Malvinas to distract from a horrible economy. Americans shouldn’t be involved; Syria is a meaningless place not worth one American life. Then again, so were Libya and Iraq.

155 mm systems vary, but 30-40km (18.75-25 miles) is not unusual, and the Excalibur (ours) can do 50 km (31.25 miles) with the right ammo.
It's a tough choice. One you didn't mention was the future of "Syria, a province of Turkey once more" versus "Iran annexes Syria." Another ugly pair of possibilities.

I agree with much of what you say. I dont think we should get involved in every confluct. My point was simply concern for many innocents. On the report of chem weapons, if true, we would have to act. They should be obliterated by us to make sure they do not fall into hands that will use them against us or our allies. Barring any contrary info from military chiefs, I would take that action immediately to wipe them out and capability to make more.
